Trio of scorers lead Mustangs over Gryphons with 84-79 win

Box Score GUELPH, Ont. - The Western Mustangs men's basketball team added another win to their now 3-8 record on Wednesday night after defeating the Guelph Gryphons 84-79 at the W.F. Mitchell Athletic Centre.

Three Mustangs players scored 20 points with Greg Morrow leading the way with 28 points on 9-16 shooting while going 10-14 on free throws. Peter Scholtes and Eric McDonald were next up on the Western scoresheet, adding 21 and 20 points respectively. Zachary Angus led the Guelph offence, scoring 16 points in a losing effort.

In the first half the Mustangs took control outscoring the Gryphons by 17 points in the second quarter alone and shooting 35.9% from the floor. Leading scorers for the Mustangs were McDonald and Morrow who scored 13 and 11 points respectively, to help put Western up at the end of the half 37-28.

The Gryphons rebounded in the second half, outscoring Western 51-47 with the help of Angus who put up 14 points while the team itself was able to control the paint. The Mustangs were able to maintain their lead with an impressive shooting performance going 52% from the floor with the help of Morrow, who put up another 17 points to give him 28 on the night, marking the fifth time this season that the junior has scored over 20 points in a contest. In the end, the Mustangs were able to pull off a 84-79 win.

The Mustangs now take a few nights off before they face the Laurier Golden Hawks on Saturday evening at the Laurier Athletic Centre in Waterloo. Tip-off is set for 3:00 p.m.
