Mustangs top Marauders 5-0 on Saturday afternoon

LONDON, Ont. – Five different Western Mustangs scorers found the back of the net as the women's soccer team defeated the McMaster Marauders 3-0 on Saturday afternoon at Mustangs Field.

"Getting the goal we got towards the end of the first half to make it 1-0, which was a great goal – great buildup, great ball by Angelika [Mihalopulos], great finish – it was a real quality goal, once we went up 1-0 they had to change up their tactics a little bit," said Mustangs head coach Martin Painter. "We had to defend a bit more in the second half, but that opened up space to allow us to use our speed, which fortunately for us we were able to use effectively."

With the win the Mustangs move to 11-2-1 on the season and are battling Laurier and York for the top spot in the OUA West Division. The Marauders fall to 3-7-3 in 2014, and are in seventh place in the OUA West.

Western used a balanced attack on Saturday afternoon with Lauren Winquist, Tianna Deluzio, Lauren Vandenbygaart, Amanda Boyle and Paige Howard supplying the offence.

"It's confidence," said Painter on having a balanced attack. "Having multiple players who go on the field believing they can make a difference and score a goal. Realistically if you're going to win big games, playoff games, you're going to need contributions by different players, sometimes unexpected places. I think having that balanced scoring – that depth – will be key going forward."

Boyle's goal gives her sole possession of the CIS scoring lead with 21 goals on the year, pulling one goal ahead of Laurier's Emily Brown.

The Mustangs came out strong in the first half, controlling the play for the majority of the first 45 and kept the ball in the attacking half for large stretches at a time. Western eventually broke through the Marauders defence as Lauren Winquist fired a shot past McMaster keeper Brittany Duffey in the 41st minute to send the home side into the second half with a 1-0 lead.

McMaster opened the second with their first chance of the contest off of a corner by Amanda Jones, however it was the Mustangs that struck first just moments later as Tianna Deluzio scored her third goal of the season off of a penalty shot to give the Mustangs a 2-0 lead in the 53rd minute.

Western increased the lead to 3-0 just five minutes later as a fantastic corner from Deluzio was headed in by Lauren Vandenbygaart for her 3rd tally of the year. Boyle then added her 21st of the year on a breakaway in the 79th minute.

That looked like it would be all the scoring for the day, however Paige Howard wasn't finished as she fired a shot into the McMaster net just seconds before the final whistle to give Western a 5-0 win.

Next up for the Mustangs are their final regular season contests as they host the Guelph Gryphons on Saturday, October 18 at 1 p.m. before finishing up their schedule with a crucial road contest against the York Lions on October 19.
