Game Preview: Mustangs host Windsor and Team China this weekend

After opening up their regular season last weekend on home ice, the Mustangs women's hockey team are gearing up for two more home games this weekend as the Windsor Lancers roll into town to face-off against the purple and white on Saturday, October 18, before Team China takes the ice against the Mustangs on Sunday, October 19.

Western split their two games to start the season, as they downed the Waterloo Warriors 4-3 in overtime action last Saturday and lost a hard fought 2-1 battle to the Laurier Golden Hawks in a shootout on Sunday. With the win and the loss the Mustangs hold a record of 1-0-1 in the OUA standings heading into this weekend's action.

Three new faces to the Mustangs roster proved themselves in their first game of OUA regular season action as Ali Beres, Tia Kipfer, and Katie Hubert each provided a goal towards the Mustangs win on Saturday.

Mustangs veteran and two-time OUA first-team all-star Katelyn Gosling made her presence known right from the get-go, as she scored her first goal of the season in last Saturday's game to help lead the Mustangs to their first regular season victory. After the weekend, Gosling has tallied a goal and three assists in two games so far.

Mustang Brianna Iazzolino is tied for second in the OUA with 3 assists after a strong start to the season. Having already made her mark on the OUA leaderboard with just two games played this season, the third-year Thunder Bay, Ont., native, will be a key component to the Mustangs unit.

The Lancers head into Saturday's contest fresh off of a home opening weekend as well, when they racked up two consecutive wins against the Warriors and the Golden Hawks with scores of 3-2 and 2-1 respectively to put them into a tie for third place in the OUA after the first week of play.

The Lancers recent success can be partly attributed to goalie Marissa Kozovski, as she sits among the league leaders in a number of statistical categories, including ranking fifth in save percentage with a .950 mark.  With the second-year, Pickering, Ont., native holding the Lancers goal line in Saturday's action, Kozovski definitely poses a threat to the Mustangs offence.

Western vs. Team China – Sunday, October 19 at 4:00 p.m.

China's national team will return to Thompson Arena this Sunday for their fifth annual match-up with the purple and white as the Mustangs and Team China have gone head-to-head in a friendly exhibition contest each year since 2010.  In the past five years the Mustangs have been able to walk away with four consecutive wins, and one tie that occurred in the two team's first meeting back in 2010. Regardless of the outcome, Sunday's match will give the Mustangs a nice break form OUA action before a busy weekend on the road.
