TORONTO, Ont. – The Western Mustangs men's soccer team concluded their regular season with a six game undefeated streak after holding the York Lions to a 0-0 tie on Sunday afternoon.
Â
With Sunday's result the Mustangs hand the Lions what was just their second tie of the season, as well as secure a fourth place finish in the OUA West Division.
Â
As York headed into the game with 14 wins and only one tie on their record, the Mustangs were expecting a tough battle – especially with numerous injuries on the team. It would not be easy seeing as York holds the number one spot in both the OUA and CIS but the purple and white proved they were up for the challenge.
Â
In a game filled with back-and-forth action, the Mustangs maintained a strong offensive attack while also staying strong against York retaliations. As the first 45 minutes played out both teams were unable to get themselves on the scoreboard and the game went into half-time sitting at 0-0.
Â
The second half would see much of the same momentum as the first; with both teams getting their fair share of chances but being unable to finish and get the ball between the posts. With the game winding down, the Mustangs remained strong until the final whistle to hold the Lions to a 0-0 tie; a result which the team was certainly pleased with.
Â
With the regular season now completed, the Mustangs finish in fourth place in the OUA West Division with an 8-4-4 record for 28 points, while the Lions stay in first with a record of 15-0-2.
Â
Next up for the Mustangs is OUA playoff action; their first round match will be played on Wednesday, October 22 against the Windsor Lancers. Game time is set for 7 p.m.
