Weekend Preview: Mustangs take on Nipissing and Laurentian

After a pair of victories last weekend the Mustangs women's hockey team will look to continue their winning streak as they hit the road this weekend to face off against the Nipissing Lakers on Saturday, October 25 before playing the Larentian Voyageurs on Sunday, October 26.

The Mustangs women's hockey team split last weekend's home ice action between OUA competition and exhibition tradition, with the purple and white downing the Windsor Lancers 2-1 in shootouts on Saturday before going on to earn their fourth consecutive victory against Team China with a 4-1 score on Sunday.

In Saturday's contest against the Lancers the Mustangs found themselves in the shootout rounds for a second consecutive game, after having fallen to the Golden Hawks 2-1 in shootout action the Sunday before. However, Saturday's shootout round would prove to fare better for the purple and white as Kendra Broad single-handedly brought the Western win, being the only shooter to hit the back of the net. Broad's shootout goal marked her second goal of the game, following up the puck past the Lancers goaltender to tie up the score in the third period of action.

Thunder Bay, Ont., native Brianna Iazzolino also contributed to the Mustangs win last Saturday, providing the assist on Broad's equalizer. Iazzolino remains tied for second in the OUA with four assists after having collected at least one assist per game in the three regular season matches the Mustangs have played this season.

Western vs. Nipissing - Saturday, October 25 at 3:30 p.m.

After playing the last three regular season games at home, the Mustangs will take to the road on Saturday to face-off against the Nipissing Lakers. The Lakers head into this Saturday's contest after a weekend that saw the team split their games with a 5-2 defeat at the hands of Queen's, while earning their second win of the season with a 4-1 victory over OUIT. With the win and the loss, the Lakers hold 2-1-1 record in the OUA standings.

Lakers' Kaley Tienhaara has had an impressive season so far; the first year forward currently leads the OUA in assists with six and also holds second in the OUA for total points with six. Nipissing's Samantha Strassburger is another fresh face on the roster that has been making an impression on the OUA leaderboard this season, sitting in second place for power play goals with two while also claiming third place for both total points and goals with five and three, respectively. With these two new players contributing to the Lakers offensive unit this season, the Mustangs will have to be sharp on defence in this Saturday's contest.

Western vs. Laurentian – Sunday, October 26 at 2:00 p.m.

The Laurentian Voyageurs head into this Sunday's action coming off of two recent defeats after falling 4-2 to OUIT last Saturday and 6-0 to Queen's last Sunday. With last weekend's results, the Voyageurs now sit at the bottom of the OUA standings with a 0-4-0 record on the season. After an unsuccessful start to the year the Voyageurs will be looking to claim their first victory, and it will be goaltender Laura Deller who will be a key component in their efforts. Deller has played in three of the team's four regular season matches so far this season and in those games has racked up 78 total saves, good for third place in the OUA. With a strong net-minder between the posts, the Voyageurs will look to put their best efforts forward to fend off the Mustangs offensive attacks in this Sunday's match-up.
