Scapinello leads Mustangs over Gaels in straight sets

Kingston, Ont. - Coming off back to back wins, the Mustangs continued their streak with a 3-0 win against Queen's Saturday evening at the ARC Main Gym.

With the win, the Mustangs hold a 3-0 record and become the sole holder of first place within the OUA. The Gaels stand at 0-2 on the season so far.

Trading points early in the first set, both teams struggled to create a substantial point deficit until consecutive serving errors were made by the Gaels. Using the momentum, the Mustangs pulled away with accurate serving and eight kills to maintain a steady lead and end the set 25-18.

Reluctant to allow another set go to the Mustangs, the Gaels kept the score close by matching the Mustangs point for point until they were finally able to take the lead for the first time at 6-7. The Mustangs regained the lead, but struggled to keep the Gaels in a point deficit as they tied the set at 15, and again at 23. Ending on a kill from Justin Scapinello, the Mustangs won the set 25-23.

Taking an early 4-1 lead, the Mustangs used the momentum from the previous sets to pull further ahead of Queen's throughout the game. Fourth-year Gael Tyler Scheerhoorn changed the game when he began blocking the power shots from Scapinello and Chris Newcombe, closing the point gap to 12-11. The Mustangs struggled to take back control of the set leading to the game tied at 21-21. After exchanging points, Queen's 13th service error of the night gave the Mustangs the third set 25-23.

Scapinello topped the score sheet with 19 points and 17 kills, followed by Mike Tomlinson of the Gaels who recorded 13.5 points. Meanwhile, Matt Silver recorded 11 digs, and Newcombe contributed four blocks.

The Mustangs next host Waterloo on October 31 at Alumni Hall at 8:00 p.m.
