NORTH BAY, Ont., - The Mustangs women's hockey team picked up their first victory on the road this weekend after downing the Nipissing Lakers 2-1in Saturday afternoon`s action.
With the victory, the Mustangs now advance to a 3-0-1 record in the OUA standings, while the loss for the Lakers gives the team a 2-3-1 record so far this season.
The Mustangs came out onto the Lakers home ice this afternoon looking to battle hard to add another victory, and two points, to their record.
Mustangs
Sydney Kidd put Western onto the scoreboard early in the action, finding the back of the net just less than four minutes into the period.
Despite the Mustangs getting the quick jump on the scoreboard, they were unable to further their advantage, nor were the Lakers able to cut the purple and white lead, sending the match 1-0 into the first intermission.
In the second frame of the action the Lakers were looking to get themselves onto the scoreboard, and it was second-year forward, Brooklyn Irwin who did just that at 9:50, as she moved the puck past Mustangs goaltender,
Kelly Campbell, to even out the score.
Kendra Broad continued her impressive performance from last Sunday's victory against Windsor as she racked up her third goal of the season m
idway through the second period. Broad was able to put the puck past the Lakers goaltender, Jacqueline Rochefort, to secure the 2-1 Mustangs advantage and secure the purple and white win.
Broad was not alone in her efforts however, as teammates
Cassidy Gosling and
Stacey Scott set her up with the assists to hit the back of Rochefort's net for the second and final Mustangs goal of the game.
The Mustangs were able to maintain their 2-1 advantage throughout the rest of the match to claim their third victory of the regular season. This afternoon's contest also marks the first regular season game for the Mustangs that did not move into overtime action.
The Mustangs will be back in action for their second game of the weekend on Sunday, October 26 when they face-off against the Laurentian Voyageurs at 2:00 p.m. in Sudbury, Ontario.
