HAMILTON, Ont. – The Western Mustangs men's soccer team saw their playoff run come to an end on Sunday evening after falling 1-0 to the McMaster Marauders in the OUA quarterfinals.
Â
The Marauders advance to the OUA Final Four which take place on Saturday, November 1 at Tim Hortons Field in Hamilton, where they'll take on the Toronto Varsity Blues in the semi-finals.
Â
The Marauders were quick to take the lead in the match, with Marco Gennaccaro netting what would be the only goal of the game just five minutes into the match. Despite the Marauders' early advantage, the Mustangs were determined to make a comeback to keep their playoff hopes alive. The first 45 minutes of play would not be enough, and the score remained at 1-0 going into halftime.
Â
As the second half began the purple and white came back ready to try to gain an equalizer. Strong play from the defensive unit warded off any further McMaster offensive pushes, while up front the Mustangs continued to apply pressure in hopes of scoring a goal. Unfortunately for Western the final whistle came before they were able to net a goal, handing them a 1-0 loss and eliminating them from championship contention.
Â
The Mustangs finish their 2014 campaign with a 9-5-4 regular season and playoff record. The team will now turn their attention to the off-season and preparing for the 2015 season.
