In the course of this weekend, 14 different Western players made it onto the score sheet in a three game offensive outburst that resulted in 60 goals for the Western Mustangs women's lacrosse team as they closed out their regular season with wins over Trent, Laurier, and Guelph. With the three wins the Mustangs completed their fourth consecutive undefeated OUA regular season, and head into the OUA Championships in first place in the OUA standings.
Â
The Mustangs travelled to Guelph on Saturday defeating Trent 23-7 on the strength of
Sheehan Mulholland's goal and 6 assists. Western found success early on as sophomore
Heather Pearson opened the scoring just over a minute into the contest and closed out the game with 4 goals.
Â
On Sunday, the Mustangs were off to Laurier to face off against the Guelph Gryphons and Laurier Golden Hawks.
Â
Western dominated play in an 18-6 victory that morning as
Tawnie Johnson established the tempo early. Johnson opened the scoring 18 seconds into the game to establish a lead, followed by six unanswered goals for the purple and white. Third year midfielder
Michelle Farrugia had a game high for Western with four goals.
Â
Later that afternoon, the Mustangs prevailed and capped off their season with a 19-10 victory against Laurier. The Mustangs found success in an early attack as senior
Tenyka Snider scored the first of her three goals just 53 seconds into the game.
Â
However, the team's success did not escape the notice of head coach Dave Hastings.
Â
"It's always great to see the offensive output this weekend but I also have to commend the defense and goaltenders for a great weekend." Hastings added, "So much happens off our defense and transition, and I could not be more pleased with their work."
Â
Next weekend's provincial tournament will be hosted by UOIT in Oshawa, with the Mustangs opening up Friday October 31, 2014.
Â
Come support your Western Mustangs as they are in pursuit of their fourth consecutive OUA title.
