The Mustangs picked up a pair of victories last weekend as they took to the road to face off against the Nipissing Lakers and the Laurentian Voyageurs. In last Saturday's matchup against the Lakers, the Mustangs earned a 2-1 win before facing off against the Voyageurs on the Sunday, dominating the third period to walk away with a 5-2 victory.
With the victories, the Mustangs enter week five with a 4-0-1 record in the OUA standings so far this season.
In the first three games of the Mustangs regular season, the purple and white found themselves in overtime action in all three of those games, two of which were decided in shootout rounds. Meanwhile, this past weekend the Mustangs were able to get the job done in just three periods, avoiding the overtime period and shootout rounds entirely.
Kendra Broad's goal in Sundays contest extended her scoring streak to three games. The Lindenwood University transfer is now tied with Cassidy Gosling as the Mustangs leading goal scorer after Gosling racked up two goals of her own in Sunday's win. Both Broad and Gosling are on the OUA's leaderboard as Broad ranks in second in power play goals with three while Gosling sits fourth in total goals with a trio of her own.
#Brianna Iazzolino# also had an impressive weekend on the road, as she had one assist in Saturday's match-up against the Lakers before adding two more assists in last Sunday's victory over the Voyageurs. With three more points added to Iazzolino's statistics, the third-year Thunder Bay, Ontario native now sits in fourth place in the OUA for assists with six and fifth in the OUA for points with six.
Western vs. Laurier – Saturday, November 1 at 7:30 pm
Western will travel to Waterloo this Saturday to face off against the Golden Hawks for the second time this season. The Mustangs met Laurier in the first weekend of their regular season, falling to their rivals by a score of 2-1 in a shootout loss.
The Golden Hawks head into this weekend with a 4-1-0 record having lost just once to the Windsor Lancers, who currently hold the second spot in the OUA standings. Laurier's most recent victory came in a 2-0 shutout win over the York Lions.
A key component to Laurier's success so far this season has been the play of first-year backstop Nicholle Kovach. Kovach has won all of her games while and sits second in the OUA for both goals against average and save percentage at 0.48 and .972, respectively.
Kovach was between the posts the last time that the Mustangs and the Golden Hawks met, when she was able to keep the purple and white off of the scoreboard throughout the first period despite three power play chances for the Mustangs. Despite allowing a second-period goal, Kovach bounced back and held her ground in the shootout rounds to help the Golden Hawks walk away with the win.
With the possibility that Kovach might be minding Laurier's net this Saturday, the Mustangs will be planning out a way to put the puck past this highly skilled rookie goaltender in order to generate a win over their purple rivals.
Western vs. Waterloo – Sunday, November 2 at 2:30 pm - Watch Live on OUA.tv
The Waterloo Warriors will be entering this weekend's action against the Mustangs with a 1-1-3 record in the OUA standings so far this season.
The Warriors enter week five fresh off of an unsuccessful weekend that saw losses both at home and on the road. Waterloo took a break from regular season action on Saturday, hosting the Toronto Aeros in an exhibition match, before getting back into OUA play with a 4-3 shootout loss to the York Lions.
The Mustangs and Warriors have met once already this season, as the Mustangs downed the Warriors 4-3 in overtime in the purple and white's first regular season game. The contest was a tight one, with the teams exchanging goals until they headed to overtime, where first-year Katie Hubert netted the game-winning goal for Western.
Thus, the Warriors will be looking to prove themselves against the Mustangs in this Sunday's contest and produce a victory that will end the team's three-game losing streak.Â
