Mustangs down rival Golden Hawks 3-2

WATERLOO, Ont. – The Western Mustangs women's hockey team extended their winning streak to four games on Saturday evening, as they downed the Laurier Golden Hawks 3-2 at Sun Life Financial Arena.

With the win, the Mustangs now hold a 4-0-1 record, and are tied for second place with the Windsor Lancers in the OUA standings. The loss for the Golden Hawks now gives the team a 4-2-0 record on the season.

The Mustangs have met on the ice with their rival Golden Hawks once already this season in an aggressive match that saw Laurier take home the 2-1 victory in shootout action.

Despite the week one loss to the Golden Hawks, the Mustangs were determined to set the record straight in Saturday's contest. Both teams came onto the ice looking to take the early advantage, and it was the Golden Hawk's Dollee Meigs who found the back of Mustangs goaltender Kelly Campbell's net to give the home side a one goal lead just under seven minutes in.

The Mustangs responded to Laurier's advantage with a goal of their own later on in the period, as Brittany Clapham put the puck past Golden Hawk netminder, Amanda Smith to even out the score 1-1 heading into the first intermission.

Both teams entered the second frame with the mindset to take the lead, and it was the Golden Hawks who tested Campbell's strength between the posts as they fired off 19 shots in the period. The Mustangs managed to get 13 shots off on Smith, but despite being out-shot by the purple and gold, it was the Mustangs who dominated the period on the scoreboard.

Just over three minutes in, Mustang Amanda Moore netted a goal to take the lead 2-1. Later in the period the purple and white furthered their advantage as Cassidy Gosling scored her fourth goal of the season to send the match into the second intermission at 3-1.

In the final period the Mustangs fended off a strong Golden Hawks offence who out-shot the purple and white once again with 19 shots on Campbell in contrast to only eight Mustangs shots on the Golden Hawks net.

The Mustangs were unable to keep the purple and gold off of the scoreboard in the third frame, as Laurier's Tammy Freiburger moved the puck past Campbell to cut the Mustangs lead 3-2 midway through the period.

However, the purple and white were able to hold their one goal advantage as the clock ran down, and skated out of Golden Hawks territory with a 3-2 victory to extend their winning streak.

The Mustangs will be back in action tomorrow, Sunday, November 2, as they face-off against the Waterloo Warriors at Waterloo's CIF Arena. Puck drop is set for 2:30 p.m.
