Women's Hockey Preview Stats vs Toronto and Ryerson - Nov. 15-16, 2014

Women's Hockey By Serena Quinn

Preview: Western hits the road to take on Toronto and Ryerson

The Western Mustangs women's hockey team picked up a home-ice 6-3 victory over the York Lions last Saturday to extend their winning streak to six consecutive games. With last weekend's victory, the Mustangs now move to a 7-0-1 record, good for first place in the OUA standings.

Six different Mustangs found the back of the Lions net in Saturday's contest to contribute to the win, and among the goal scorers were a few familiar faces.

Kendra Broad took advantage of an empty net late in the third period to add to the Mustangs lead in their 6-3 win. Broad continues to put forth outstanding performances throughout the season so far and her hard work has not gone unrecognized. The fourth-year Petrolia, Ont., native is tied for second place in the OUA, alongside teammate Cassidy Gosling, for power play goals with three, and is also tied for third in the OUA for total goals with five.

Brianna Lazzolino was another familiar name on the score-sheet Saturday. She usually contributes to the purple and white victories with her knack for assisting goals, not scoring them, but she proved in Saturday afternoon's match-up that she can put goals onto the scoreboard as well. Lazzolino leads the Mustangs in assists with six, while the goal puts her as one of the team's top three point leaders with Gosling and Broad.

Mustangs' goaltender Kelly Campbell has been a crucial part of the Mustangs six consecutive victories this season, posting incredible performances between the posts for the purple and white. Campbell also places among the best goaltenders in the OUA, as she ranks second in win percentage at .857. The St. Thomas, Ont., native also places third in both goals-against average and save percentage at 1.11 and .955, respectively, while also ranking third for total saves with 170.

With a highly skilled goaltender guarding the Mustangs net, and an arsenal of forwards known for putting points on the board all season, the purple and white are a force to be reckoned with heading into week six of regular season action.

Western vs. Toronto – Saturday, November 15 at 4:00 pm

The Toronto Varsity Blues will enter this Saturday's contest fresh off of a 3-2 win on the road over the Waterloo Warriors. With the win, the Blues improved to a 5-2-0 record in the OUA standings heading into this weekend's action.

Fourth-year forward, Sonja Weidenfelder contributed one goal to the Blue's win last Saturday, and the Toronto, Ont., native has been a strong performer for the blue and white all season, leading the team in goals with four.

Another key component to the Blues offensive unit is Kristi Riseley. The third-year Pickering, Ont., native knows how to produce plays that end in points for the Blues, as Riseley leads the team in total points with eight while also ranking fourth in the OUA for assists with seven.

Blues goaltender, Nicole Kesteris, was a crucial factor in last weekend's win for the blue and white, as the Aurora, Ont., native stopped 11 of the Warriors 13 shots on net. Kesteris ranks fifth in the OUA for both saves and win percentage with 148 and .714 respectively. If the Mustangs want to extend their winning streak to seven games in this weekend's action, they will have to have a strong offensive attack to get the puck past the Blues veteran net minder.

Western vs. Ryerson – Sunday, November 16 at 2:30 pm

The Ryerson Rams head into this Sunday's contest after picking up two wins last weekend over the Waterloo Warriors (2-0) and the Laurier Golden Hawks (4-3). The shut-out victory over the Warriors, and the shoot-out win over the Golden Hawks have improved the Rams' record to 4-4-0 in the OUA standings so far this season.

Ryerson will be entering this weekend's action against the Mustangs with a bit more confidence than they have seen all season, as last Saturday's win marked the first shut-out victory for second-year goaltender Alex Armstong and the team. Armstong has played six out of eight games this season and maintains a .500 win percentage with a 2.19 goals-against average and a save percentage of .918.

Adding to the Rams confidence is the Rams shoot-out victory over the Golden Hawks last Sunday. The win is the Ram's first ever over Laurier since Ryerson joined the OUA in the 2011-12 season.Third-year forward, Emma Rutherford recorded two goals in the win on Sunday, a performance that now makes her the leading goal-scorer for the Rams with a total of four goals in eight games played this season.

Although the Rams rank in the bottom half of the OUA standings in No. 9 of 13 total teams, last weekend was no doubt a confidence boost as the team recorded their first shutout of the season, and secured their first ever win over one of the league's top teams – the Laurier  Golden Hawks. With a new found confidence and the ability to out-battle and out-score some of their best competitors, the Rams will be looking to move that winning momentum into this Sunday's contest against the Mustangs.
