TORONTO – The Mustangs women's hockey team rounded out this weekend's action with a 2-0 victory over the Ryerson Rams on Sunday afternoon to extend their winning streak to nine consecutive games.
Â
With the win, the Mustangs now hold a 9-0-1 record, good for first place in the OUA standings, while the loss for the Rams moves the team to a record of 5-5-0.
Â
Despite the home ice advantage, the Rams got off to a rocky start in the first frame, allowing the Mustangs to dominate the play. The purple and white pressured the Rams in their end of the ice for the majority of the action and created a number of scoring opportunities, firing off 15 shots on the Rams' goaltender, Ally Sarna.
Â
Sarna defended well against the Mustangs strong offensive arsenal, however she was unable to keep the purple and white off of the scoreboard as the Mustangs'
Katelyn Gosling netted her second goal of the weekend and third of the season midway through the period to give the Mustangs a 1-0 lead heading into the break.
Â
The Rams came into the second period looking to respond to the Mustangs advantage, and they were able to apply some pressure of their own in the purple and white's end of the ice by outshooting the Mustangs eight-to-seven.
Â
Despite strong efforts from the Rams, Ryerson was unable to capitalize on their opportunities as Mustang
Kelly Campbell put forth another impressive performance between the posts.
Â
Mustang
Stacey Scott furthered the purple and white advantage to 2-0 after rushing in on the Rams end of the ice to put the puck past Sarna for her second goal of the season.
Â
The Rams came back onto the ice in the third period as what seemed like a newly rejuvenated team and dominated the action, outshooting the Mustangs 16-5. Although the Rams put up a strong offensive attack, they were unable to find an opening between Campbell and the goal by the time the clock ran down to zero. The Mustangs walked away with the 2-0 shutout win and their ninth consecutive victory of the season.
The Mustangs will be back in action on Friday, November 21, as they host the Brock Badgers at Thompson Arena. Game time is set for 7:00 p.m.
