Women's Hockey Preview Stats vs. Brock and Guelph- Nov. 21-22, 2014

Women's Hockey by Serena Quinn

Preview: Mustangs face off against Badgers and Gryphons this weekend

The Mustangs women's hockey team added another pair of wins to their season on the road last weekend, as the purple and white downed the Toronto Varsity Blues 2-1 on Saturday before shutting out the Ryerson Rams 2-0 on Sunday.

The victories extend the Mustangs winning streak to nine games and secures their place atop the OUA standings with a 9-0-1 record on the season so far.

New recruit and team point leader Kendra Broad has been a key component in the Mustangs winning streak, putting up stellar performances week after week. Last weekend's action was no different for the Petrolia, Ont., native as she propelled the purple and white to a one-goal victory over the Blues with the game winning goal scored late in the third period.

In Sunday's contest against the Rams, Broad helped to put points on the board once again, giving the assist on a goal from Katelyn Gosling contribute to the Mustangs win.

Broad leads the Mustangs in both goals and points with six and 10 respectively, while the fourth-year forward is also tied with teammate Cassidy Gosling for second in the OUA for power-play goals with three.

While Broad has been putting points onto the scoreboard, Mustangs goaltender Kelly Campbell has been keeping points off of it with her immense talent between the posts. The fourth-year St. Thomas, Ont., native has been crucial in all nine of the Mustangs wins this season and her skills are reflected on the OUA leaderboard: she leads the OUA in win percentage with .889, while she places second in both save percentage and goals against average with .960 and .98, respectively. Campbell also ranks third for total saves with 215.

With Campbell guarding the Mustangs goal line and Broad striking up front, the purple and white will continue to be a hard team to beat heading into week seven of regular season action.

Western vs. Brock – Friday, November 21, at 7:00 pm – Watch Live on OUA.tv

The Brock Badgers will be heading into this weekend's contest looking for their first win of the season. The Badgers have struggled all season to pull out a victory over their opponents, and with only 15 regular season games remaining they will be determined to put a stop to their nine game losing streak.

Last weekend the Badgers fell to both the Waterloo Warriors (3-0) and the Laurier Golden Hawks (8-4). The losses for the Badgers moved the team to a 0-7-2 record in the OUA standings.

Despite the two losses in last weekend's action, the Badgers posted some strong performances, with rookie goaltender Stephanie Loukes stopping 28 shots between the pipes in Saturday's contest against the Warriors, and 24 against the Golden Hawks. Loukes has been a key performer for the Badgers this season, as is ranked fourth in the OUA for total saves with 181 for just seven games played this season.

Western vs. Guelph – Saturday, November 22, at 7:00 pm – Watch Live on OUA.tv

The Guelph Gryphons will enter Saturday's contest after splitting their matches last weekend with a 1-0 overtime loss to the Warriors and a 4-0 win over the Golden Hawks. The Gryphons now hold a 6-2-1 record, good for fourth place in the OUA standings.

In Thursday's contest the Gryphons outshot the Warriors 30-19, but despite the discrepancy the game was evenly matched. A scoreless three periods sent the game into an overtime round where the Warriors secured the win only 10 seconds into the action.

Bouncing back from the loss, the Gryphons posted shut out win over the No. 7 Golden Hawks to restore the team's confidence.

Guelph goaltender Stephanie Nehring made an impressive 43 saves in the shutout victory, not surprising given the Oshawa , Ont., native tops the OUA in save percentage and goals against average with .965 and .92 respectively. Nehring also ranks second to Campbell in win percentage with .857 and fourth behind Campbell for total saves with 193.

With two extremely talented goaltenders facing off across the ice from each other for the first time this season in this Saturday's contest, the outcome could go either way, and there is no doubt that the Gryphons will be looking to put a stop to what could then be a ten-game Mustangs winning streak.
