Men's Basketball Preview Stats vs. Algoma - Nov. 21-22, 2014

Men's Basketball By Liana Timbol

Preview: Mustangs head to Sault Ste. Marie to take on the Thunderbirds

The Mustangs will finish off their first half road schedule this weekend with a visit to Algoma after splitting last week's games with a loss to Ryerson before bouncing back with a win over Toronto. This week the Mustangs go up against the Thunderbirds for a pair of games on Friday and Saturday night.

With a 2-2 record, the Mustangs remain in third place in the OUA West Division for the second consecutive week, sitting two points behind division leaders Windsor and Laurier.

Greg Morrow, leads the team with an average of 17.8 points per game, including dropping a combined 43 points on Ryerson and Toronto last week to earn Mustangs Male Athlete of the Week honours. First-year guard Jedson Tavernier has impressed early on in his debut season, sitting in second place on the Mustangs scoring leaderboard with 9.0 points per game. Elliot Dooley has also contributed offence while coming off the bench, averaging 6.5 points per outing as well as being the team's most consistent shooter, connecting on 52.9 percent of his field goal attempts.

Not to be outdone by his fellow Mustangs, Acadia Axemen transfer Tom Filigiano has seemed to be all over the court at times this season, contributing 7.5 points per game and leading the team with an average of 10 rebounds per game.

Western vs. Algoma - Friday, November 21 at 3 p.m./Saturday, November 22 at 8 p.m.

Early into their second season in the OUA, Algoma (0-3) has yet to find a win in two weekends of action so far this year, and will look to post their first 'W' this weekend against the Mustangs. The Thunderbirds will be back on home court, returning to Sault Ste. Marie to play the Mustangs after two disappointing losses on the road against Brock and Guelph.

It's been almost a full calendar year since the last time Western and Algoma matched up in their first ever OUA regular season contest, a game that the Mustangs won 82-71 at Alumni Hall back on November 23, 2013.

Fourth-year Thunderbird Brett Zufeit leads the team in scoring this season with an average of 10 points per game, with forward Sean Clendinning close behind at 8.0 points per game. Clendinning topped Algoma's score sheet against Guelph, scoring 13 points against the Gryphons, making the sophomore forward this week's Thunderbirds Male Athlete of the Week. Look for the Thunderbirds to rely on Zufelt and Clendinning's offence, while counting on AJ Andre Barder on the back end, as the hybrid guard/forward leads all Algoma players with 7.0 rebounds per game.
