Preview: Mustangs take on Ridgebacks and Gaels this weekend

The Mustangs women's hockey team added another pair of victories last weekend to extend their winning streak to 10 games as the purple and white edged out the Brock Badgers 2-1 on Friday, before downing the Guelph Gryphons 4-1 on Saturday. Not only did the win over the Gryphons round out the weekend's action on a high note, it also marked the first time in program history that the Mustangs have defeated Guelph, while also earning Western it's highest ever position on the CIS Top 10, coming in at fourth in this week's national rankings.

With last weekend's victories, the Mustangs maintain their hold atop the OUA standings with a record of 10-0-1 as they head into their final weekend of action before the mid-season break, facing off against the UOIT Ridgebacks this Saturday before gearing up against the Queen's Gaels on Sunday.

While the purple and white sit atop the OUA standings, Mustangs goaltender Kelly Campbell also finds herself atop the OUA leaderboard as the St. Thomas, Ont., native leads the league in win percentage with .900. Campbell also ranks second in the OUA for both goals-against average and save percentage with 0.98 and .961, respectively, while the veteran goalie is also tied for third in total saves with 244.

Campbell is just one of many Mustangs who have been a contributing factor to Western's success this season. Kendra Broad has played an important role in the Mustangs offensive attack, and ranks second in the OUA for total goals with eight, and is tied for fourth for total points with 14, while Katelyn Gosling is tied for third in the league for power-play goals with three.

Western vs. UOIT – Saturday, November 29, 2014 at 7:30 p.m. - Watch Live on OUA.tv

The UOIT Ridgebacks will be heading into this weekend's action coming off of an unsuccessful weekend on the road that saw the Ridgebacks lose to both the Waterloo Warriors (6-0) and the Laurier Golden Hawks (5-1).

With the losses, the Ridgebacks now hold a 5-6-1 record in the OUA standings so far this season.

A month on the road seems to be taking its toll on the Ridgebacks, as the loss to the Warriors last weekend marked their worst defeat in the 2014 season.

Despite a four game losing streak, the Ridgeback's are only two points away from a playoff position. With this coming weekend being the last two games for the Ridgebacks before the mid-season break, there is no doubt that they will be determined to put an end to their losing streak and propel themselves into that playoff position this weekend.

Western vs. Queen's – Sunday, November 30, 2014 at 2:30 p.m. - Watch Live on OUA.tv

The Queen's Gaels enter this weekend's match-up after splitting their games last weekend on the road, downing the Golden Hawks 5-4 in overtime action before falling to the Warriors 2-1.

With the win and the loss, the Gaels now hold an 8-2-2 record, good for second in the OUA standings so far this season.

Although they are coming off of a loss, the Gaels have already proven to be one of the best teams in the league with their successful performances throughout the season. Goaltenders Caitlyn Lahonen and Stephanie Pascal rank amongst the best in the OUA have been two of the main players in the team's success in 2014.

Third-year Lahonen has played the bulk of the games behind the goal line for the Gaels, and ranks fourth in the league for win percentage with .714. Rookie Pascal tops the OUA in both goals-against average and save percentage with 0.74 and .969 respectively for four games played.

But it hasn't just been the team's goaltenders that have kept the Gaels second only to the Mustangs in the OUA standings, as the team has had some high-powered offensive performers contributing to their success.

Taryn Pilon has been outstanding throughout the season and there is no reason to believe that she is going to slow down anytime soon. The fourth-year Peterborough, Ont., native tops the OUA in power-play goals with five, while also ranking second in total points with 15 and fourth in total goals with 7.

In addition, fourth-year Shawna Griffin tops the OUA in assists with 11, while also ranking forth for total points with 14.

With two impressive goaltenders, both of which have proven that they can protect the goal better than most others in the league, as well as a strong line of forward attackers who know a thing or two about putting points onto the scoreboard, the Gaels will no doubt be a strong obstacle if the Mustangs plan on rounding out the first half of their season with a 12 game winning streak.
