OSHAWA, Ont. – The Mustangs women's hockey team extended their winning streak to 11 games on Saturday night after downing the UOIT Ridgebacks 3-1 on the road.
Â
With the win the Mustangs maintain their place atop the OUA standings with a 12-0-1 record on the season so far, while the loss for the Ridgebacks moves the team to a 5-7-1 record.
Â
If it wasn't clear before Saturday night's match-up that
Brianna Iazzolino is an offensive force to be reckoned with, she certainly proved her talent against the Ridgebacks as the Thunder Bay, Ont., native racked up her third and fourth goals of the season to propel the Mustangs to a 3-1 victory.
Â
With a scoreless first period that saw the Ridgebacks outshoot the purple and white nine-to-seven, Iazzolino came out in the second frame determined to take the upper hand. Just over midway through the period she would do just that, putting the puck past Ridgeback goaltender Cassie Charrette to give the Mustangs a one-point advantage going into the break.
Â
The Ridgebacks came onto the ice in the third frame looking to even out the scoreboard, but it was the Mustangs who protected their advantage as
Sydney Kidd found the back of Charette's net to put the purple and white up 2-0. That two-point advantage didn't last long, however, as the Ridgebacks responded less than 30 seconds later with a goal of their own to set the score at 2-1.
Â
UOIT battled hard throughout the period in hopes of evening out the score and taking the advantage, and despite an offensive assault that saw the Ridgebacks fire off ten shots on Mustangs goaltender
Kelly Campbell their efforts were of no avail. Campbell remained vigilant between the posts, stopping 23 of 24 shots to protect the purple and white advantage.
Â
The Mustangs were able to stay aggressive on offence, and with just over six and a half minutes left in the action Iazzolino netted a final goal to increase Western's lead to 3-1 and secure the victory for the purple and white.
Â
Western will be back in action on Sunday, November 30 when they face off against the Queen's Gaels at Kingston Memorial Centre, with the puck dropping at 2:30 p.m.
