LONDON, Ont. – A 30-point first quarter helped lead the Windsor Lancers to an 85-55 victory over the Western Mustangs on Wednesday night at Alumni Hall.
Topping the Mustangs score sheet was senior Greg Morrow, who finished with a game high 18 points and also led the team with seven rebounds. Elliot Dooley followed with 15 points, going a perfect 6-for-6 from the field, including making all three of his attempted three-point shots.
The Lancers took control right from the opening tip, opening the scoring only three seconds in off of a three-pointer from Bradford Parker and starting a 12-2 run to take an early lead. The Mustangs began to fight back midway through the quarter, with Morrow generating the majority of the team's offence, scoring 10 out of the 12 points of the quarter. Despite Morrow's strong play the quarter ended with the Lancers holding a 30-12 lead.
The Mustangs defence picked up in the second quarter with six defensive rebounds, including three from Acadia transfer Tom Filgiano who became a force to beat on the court. The purple and white continued to gain momentum near the end of the second quarter refusing to let the Lancers score the last basket of the half. The first half of the game closed out to a score of 49-25 in favour of the Lancers. Rotimi Osuntola led the visiting side with 12 points in the half, eventually finishing the night with a team-high 15 points.
Western tightened things up in the second half, using strong rebounding and fast hands to limit the Lancers open looks and cut down their field goal percentage from an astonishing 57.1 percent in the first half to 41.2 in the second. Not only did the Mustangs improve on the defensive end, but they increased their own shooting percentage as well, firing at a 37.9 percent rate in the second half compared to 29.4 percent clip in the opening 20 minutes.
After narrowly being outscored in the third quarter by a 16-11 score, the Mustangs attempted to close the gap in the fourth. Leading the way were Dooley and forward Anthony Spiridis, who combined for 14 of Western's 19 points in the frame. Both players took over the game for short stretches, with Dooley sinking eight points, including two three-pointers less than 30 seconds apart. Spiridis followed up shortly thereafter, hitting two free throws before grabbing a defensive rebound and going the full length of the court to finish things off with a layup.
Despite the fast hustle of the Mustangs in the fourth, the early deficit proved too large to lessen and the buzzer sounded with the Lancers taking an 85-55 victory.
"Today, mentally we weren't ready, especially in that first quarter. We played a very good team tonight and we have got to raise our level of intensity and play to be able to compete in this league" said Mustangs head coach Brad Campbell. "We know that we're going to get better as the season goes on and our goal is to get better and stronger as a team each day and each week."
The Mustangs return to the court this Friday night to take on the Guelph Gryphons at Alumni Hall. Tip-off is at 8 p.m. and the game can be watched live at OUA.tv.Â
