The Western Mustangs men's basketball team heads into a crucial turning point in their season as they fight for last minute points and playoff seeding heading into their last two regular season games of the year. The Mustangs will try to add another pair of wins to their current 8-11 record this week against the Brock Badgers on Wednesday and the Laurier Golden Hawks on Saturday. Western currently holds the fourth spot in the OUA West Division and sits just two points behind third-place Laurier. The purple and white will be looking to steal the third-place seed from the Golden Hawks in a pivotal contest on Saturday afternoon that will determine their opponents in the first round of OUA playoffs.
The Mustangs have four players averaging double digits this season with leaders
Greg Morrow and
Peter Scholtes putting up a respective average of 16.8 and 13.8 points a game, supported by
Quinn Henderson and
Eric McDonald who have both averaged 10 points a game on the season.
Western vs. Brock - Wednesday, February 12 at 8 PM
The last time the Mustangs met the Brock Badgers on the court they walked away with an unexpected loss but put up a good fight all throughout the game. With only three wins this season, the Badgers are currently in last place in the OUA West Division but 6'7 guard Dani Elgadi, who has averaged 18.5 points a game on the season, have proven to cause serious problems for the Western squad. Elgadi has established himself as a threat in the paint where he has found his niche in scoring and rebounding and the purple and white will be looking to contain him to come away with a win.
Game time is set for 8:00 p.m. on Wednesday in St. Catharines.
Western vs. Laurier - Saturday, February 15 at 3 PM Watch live on Mustangs TV
The Laurier Golden Hawks are in third place in the OUA West with a record of 9-11 and are one win above the Mustangs. In what could be the match of the season for both teams the Mustangs will be looking to shut down Will Coulthard, who dropped 22 points for the Golden Hawks in their last meeting with the purple and white. Laurier will take on top-ranked McMaster before playing their last regular season game on the schedule against Western, so the third-place seed heading into playoffs will likely come down to the winner of Saturday's game. The Mustangs will be looking to their home-court advantage in the contest to come away with a victory and the third-place seed.
Tip-off is scheduled for 3:00 p.m. on Saturday at Alumni Hall.
