Mustangs eliminated by Toronto in double overtime in Game 3

Box Score TORONTO – A goal from Rebecca Bourgeois midway through the second overtime period gave the Toronto Varsity Blues a 3-2 win over the Western Mustangs women's hockey team in Game 3 of the teams' OUA Quarterfinal series on Sunday afternoon at Varsity Arena.

With the win the Varsity Blues take the first round series 2-1, eliminating the Mustangs from the OUA playoffs. Toronto will now move on to face the Laurier Golden Hawks next week.

Sunday's game was the second overtime contest of the series, and the second time in two years that the Mustangs and Varsity Blues first round series would be decided in extra time.

Bourgeois' goal, the first of her OUA career, came with 8:28 remaining in the second overtime period coming off of assists from veteran defender Stacey Oue and forward Courtney Brind'Amour-McClure.

Mustangs netminder Kelly Campbell was nothing short of spectacular in the loss, stopping a career-high 50 shots in her 90 minutes on the ice, while Nicole Kesteris stopped 25 of the 27 shots she faced in the Varsity Blues net.

Western opened up the scoring in Game 3 as Tara Cation recorded her second career playoff goal, scoring on the power play off of an assist from second-year forward Cassidy Gosling, giving the Mustangs a 1-0 lead after the first period.

The Varsity Blues responded with two goals of their own late in the second frame with goals from Melanie McLaughlin and Amanda Ricker at 16:25 and 19:00 respectively to take a one-goal lead heading into the third.

In the third period the Mustangs power play struck again, scoring their fifth goal of the series, with Brittney Clapham beating Kesteris off of a rebound from defender Katelyn Gosling with just over 10 minutes remaining in the third. The remaining 10 minutes solved nothing, sending both teams to overtime for the second time in three games.

Just as in game one the first overtime period was scoreless before Bourgeois ended the game midway through the second extra period to give Toronto a 3-2 win and a 2-1 series victory.

Western finishes their season with 18 wins, 15 losses, one regular season overtime loss, and one tie. The Mustangs went 3-4 with one tie in exhibition play, 14-9-1 in the regular season, and 1-2 in the playoffs.
