Western heads to McMaster for an OUA West Semi-Final battle

The OUA West Semi-Final is on the horizon for the Western Mustangs men's basketball team this Saturday after a thrilling last-minute win over the Lakehead Thunderwolves in the quarterfinals this past Wednesday. Western now has to take down the goliath of the OUA's West Division, the CIS No. 5 McMaster Marauders, who have ended their regular season in first place with an impressive 18-4 record.

Greg Morrow has been the catalyst on offence for the purple and white throughout the season leading the team in scoring with 16 points per game alongside fellow veteran Peter Scholtes who has been averaging 14 a game. Beginning the first half of the season at 2-8, the Mustangs turned things around after the holiday break posting a four-game winning streak to start the second half and ending the season in fifth place with an 8-14 record.

The Mauraders have been one of the top teams in the country this season exemplified by their 13-game winning streak that ran from November 22 to February 8 en route to an overall 18-4 record and the top spot in the West Division.

Saturday will mark the third time Western and McMaster have met on the hard court this season with the Maruaders taking both games, winning 79-49 on November 30 and 78-61 on January 25.

The nation's fifth-ranked team are led by a trio of veteran players including guards Joe Rocca and Aaron Redpath and centre Taylor Black. Each of the three has averaged more than 10 points a game this season with Rocca leading the way with 14.1 per game while Black tops the team's rebounding charts averaging 7.9 per game.

The winner of Saturday's contest will advance to the 2014 Wilson Cup taking place from February 28 to March 1 at the Mattamy Athletic Centre in Toronto. Game time is set for 2:00 p.m. at McMaster's Burridge Gym.
