Men's Volleyball Western Sports Info

Mustangs take aim at sole possession of second place this weekend

The Western Mustangs men's volleyball team continued their dominance in the OUA and extended their winning streak to seven games with a pair of wins last week against York on Saturday and Nipissing on Sunday. With just two games left in the regular season the Mustangs boast a 15-3 record and sit in a tie for second with Waterloo in the OUA standings. The Mustangs now face the Waterloo Warriors and the Guelph Gryphons in away game action as they wrap up their regular season on the road.

In Sunday's win over the Nipissing Lakers Garret May had another exceptional performance with 14 kills, three aces and one block for a team-high of 18 points, while Phil James continued to be an offensive force in the middle, adding twelve points of his own on the day. May and James both make their mark on the OUA scoring leaderboard, coming in at number two and number eight, respectively, while Justin Scapinello also cracks the leaderboard top 10 in the tenth spot. Scapinello recorded an impressive 21.5 points in the team's earlier win over Waterloo, his highest scoring performance of the season.

Although the Mustangs have already secured their place in the playoffs, this weekend's matchups, and Friday's game in particular, will be crucial for playoff seeding and will determine whether the Mustangs earn a bye directly into the OUA Final Four.

Western at Waterloo - Friday, February 7 at 8:00 p.m. - Watch Live via the Warriors Webcast

Friday's game will be one of the most important contests of the year as two of the top teams in the OUA match up for the second time this season. The Waterloo Warriors are an even match with the Mustangs in the standings with both teams sitting in a tie for second in the OUA with an identical 15-3 record. In their first meeting, Western's season opener, the Mustangs scraped by with a 3-2 victory over the Warriors and the Waterloo squad will be looking for redemption on Friday as well as fighting to determine which team will likely emerge as the OUA's second seed and earn which squad will earn a bye into the Final Four.

Aleks Poldma has been one part of the Warriors success this year, scoring a team-high 19 points in the last meeting with the Mustangs and recording 13 in Waterloo's most recent 3-2 win against Toronto.

Friday's match is scheduled to begin at 8:00 p.m. in Waterloo's Physical Activities Complex.

Western at Guelph - Saturday, February 8 at 8:00 p.m. - Watch Live via the Gryphons Webcast

The Guelph Gryphons find themselves near the bottom of the pack as the OUA regular season heads into its final weekend as they sit in a three-way tie for eighth with a 5-13 record. It was a clean straight-set win for the Mustangs when they faced the Gryphons in late November and a hungry Guelph squad will be looking for vengeance against the purple and white while also looking to steal two points from the Mustangs in their last game of the season.

The game is set for 8:00 p.m. at W.F. Mitchell Athletics Centre
