Waterloo and Western go down to wire in overtime, Mustangs fall 81-80

Box Score WATERLOO, Ont. – The Western Mustangs men's basketball team went to overtime against Waterloo for the second time in seven days but found themselves on the other side of the coin this time around, falling 81-80 to the Warriors on the road.

The top scorers for the Mustangs were Greg Morrow and Quinn Henderson, who scored 20 and 17 points, respectively.

In the first half, the Warriors established their largest lead in the first quarter, going up nine points despite starting with an unimpressive 35% field goal percentage. Western was able to close the gap early in the second and after the teams went basket-for basket they headed into the second half with the score at 36-35 for the Mustangs.

Greg Morrow began the second half with a jumper that would then start a two minute rush from the Mustangs offence, as Western jumped ahead by six points for what ended up being their biggest lead of the game. However, turnovers would prove detrimental for Western as the Warriors were able to score seven points off turnovers alone in the third quarter.

The fourth quarter was not much different from the rest of the game, going back and forth until the end. In the last minute, Mike Helsby of the Warriors hit a jumper to tie the game up 71-71, forcing the teams to go to overtime for the second straight week.

In overtime, the Mustangs lost track of their defence and found themselves down by six points with 2:33 left on the clock. But with the help of a motivational George Jonson three-pointer, the Mustangs were able to get back into the game. Down by three with 22 second left on the clock, #Scholtes# tied it up with another three to put the game at 79-79.

The Warriors rushed to the other end of the court, missing a jumper by Elimane Diallo but grabbing the rebound to get an important two points.  After Eric MacDonald ran the floor and caused the Warriors to foul, he was put to the line with the game on the line and the Mustangs down 81-79. Unfortunately for Western, he would hit only one of two free throws, and after the Mustangs missed a rebound opportunity the game ended at 81-80 for Waterloo.

The Mustangs will take a break until Monday where they will be on the road to take on the Windsor Lancers in their first of three games on the schedule for next week. Game time is set for 8PM.
