GUELPH, Ont. – A first half goal from
Amanda Boyle proved to be all the offence the Mustangs would need as the women's soccer team secured a 2-0 victory on the road against the Guelph Gryphons on Sunday afternoon.
Â
With Sunday's win the Mustangs regular season record now sits at 6-1-0, and the team remains at the top of the OUA with 18 points. Boyle continued her strong performance up front for the purple and white, and currently sits in second place on the OUA leaderboard with 11 goals so far this season.
Â
The second year striker was quick to get the Mustangs on the scoreboard, netting a goal just five minutes into the match. The majority of the match would see the Mustangs offensive unit get multiple opportunities, however Gryphons goalie Libby Brennan proved to be a challenge, recording 12 saves on the day.
Â
In the second half the purple and white did not stop pressing, putting heavy pressure on the Gryphons defence. Late in the half
Tianna Deluzio found the back of the net on a penalty shot to put the Mustangs up 2-0; the scoreboard would remain that way until the final whistle.
Â
The win gives Western a 1-1-0 record on the weekend, after the York Lions halted their undefeated streak on Saturday. Guelph's regular season record now sits at 2-4-0 with the loss.
Â
The Mustangs will look to start a new undefeated streak later this week when they host the Windsor Lancers on Friday, September 19. Kick-off for the match is set for 6 p.m. at Mustangs Field.
