Women's lacrosse hosts successful opening weekend

The Mustangs women's lacrosse team kicked off their season on a high note this past Sunday with a convincing three wins over McMaster, Toronto, and Guelph at Mustangs Field.

In the opening match against McMaster, Tawnie Johnson opened up the scoring early on at the two minute mark of what would be a 10-goal first half for the Mustangs. The Western offence was able to add eight more goals in the second half, with the Mustangs defence holding off any attacks as they climbed to a 18-1 victory over the Marauders. Leading Western in points were Johnson, who finished with five goals, Tasha Macdonald who also added five, and Fran Bonomi who netted four goals in the match.

In their second game of the day against Guelph, the Mustangs scoring got off to a slower start with the Gryphons allowing Western to only net five goals in the first half. However the Mustangs relentless offence was able to overcome their opponents to net twelve goals in the second half and come away with a 17-2 win.  Tenyka Snider led the team in scoring with five goals and an assist, while Michelle Farrugia scored four goals for the purple and white.

Despite dominating their first two games, the Toronto Varisty Blues proved to be a more formidable opponent in the Mustangs final match of the day. At halftime the scoreboard sat at 8-7 with the Mustangs only holding a one-point, however the Mustangs were able to power through the match and come out with the victory, defeating the Blues 15-10. Once again Tenyka Snider had a strong game, with the Caledon, Ont. native netting seven goals.

"Overall, a great start to the season," said head coach Dave Hastings about Sunday's successes. "Team execution was good and we saw some nice work with some of the new offensive sets. Considering last week's weather delaying practice and exhibition games, I'd say the team did quite well.  We are still a way from where we want to be and our best play, but we will get there."

The Mustangs will look to continued their winning streak on Saturday, September 27 when they travel to Peterborough, where they will face off against Laurier and York. Game times are set for 9:45 a.m. and 1:15 p.m.
