PETERBOROUGH, Ont.- The Western Mustangs women's lacrosse team made a four hour trip to Trent University worth it, beating Laurier and York on Saturday, September 24, by scores of 14-8 and 22-1, respectively.
Mustangs head coach
Dave Hastings was happy with his team's performance on the day.
"Laurier played hard but the team executed well on offence and defense," said Hastings. "The York game was a great opportunity to work on some things and I have to give York credit as they didn't give up. "
The Mustangs broke from the gate quickly against rival Laurier with four goals in the opening seven minutes. Defensively, Western was equally effective, holding Laurier off the scoreboard until 14 minutes into the opening half. The Mustangs took an 8-2 lead into the second half and although the Golden Hawks scored a pair of quick goals, the Mustangs responded with five of their own. The game ended in a 14-8 final as
Tawnie Johnson and
Michelle Farrugia led the way with three goals apiece.
Game two saw Western dominate a young York squad, winning 22-1. Despite the loss, York were relentless at both ends of the field against the experienced Mustangs. Farrugia's eight points and
Sheehan Mulholland's seven points led Western to a victory. Freshman
Claire Palmer made her first start in net to record the win.
The 5-0 Mustangs are back in league action in two weeks on Saturday October 11, 2014, at McMaster, where they will have a 1:15 p.m. start against the Marauders.
