Preview: Mustangs prepare to battle Lions

The Mustangs women's hockey team endured their first shutout and regular-time loss last weekend as the Windsor Lancers downed the purple and white 4-0. Although the Mustangs had encountered two losses to the Laurier Golden Hawks (2-1) and the Queens Gaels (2-1) leading up to last Saturday's contest, the Lancers were the first team to serve the Mustangs a defeat within the regular 60 minutes of play.

Despite the loss, the Mustangs remain in the OUA top spot with a record of 14-1-2 on the season so far.

With last weekend behind them the Mustangs will be looking to post better results this Saturday, January 24 when they travel to Toronto to take on the York Lions.

The Mustangs and the Lions have met once already this season, with the purple and white pulling out a 6-3 home ice victory in week five of regular season action.

Kelly Campbell continues to lead the OUA in save percentage with .946 while the St. Thomas Ont., native also ranks second in the league for total saves (365), win percentage (.800), and goals against average (1.44).

Kendra Broad will certainly continue to be a force on offence as the Lindenwood University transfer ranks second in the OUA for both total goals and power play goals with 10 and five, respectively.

While Campbell has a reputation for holding her goal line like no other in the league and Broad has definitely made herself known in the OUA this season with her skills on the other side of the blue line, the Mustangs will be up against some tough competition this weekend as the Lions harness a roster with some incredible talent of their own.

Western vs. York – Saturday, January 24 at 2:00 p.m.

The Lions will be heading into the Saturday's contest fresh off of a 3-1 win over the UOIT Ridgebacks last weekend.

With the win the Lions move to a 9-7-2 record on the season so far, good for seventh place in the OUA standing and just one spot shy of playoff contention.

With the sixth playoff spot just within their reach and only six games left in the regular season, there is no doubt that the Lions will be giving it their all in these next three weeks of regular season action.

The Lions have some immense talent on both ends of the ice with their league-topping goaltender Megan Lee and high-scoring power forward Lisa Stathopulos.

Lee currently tops the OUA in total saves with 444, and with the Orillia, Ont., native stopping shots between the posts, Stathopulos has been upfront targeting the back of the opposing teams' nets as the veteran forward leads the OUA in both total points and total goals with 27 and 15, respectively. Stathopulos is also tied for second in the OUA for assists with 12.
