Hubert, Rosen propel Mustangs to 3-0 victory over York

TORONTO - A single goal from Casey Rosen followed by two from Katie Hubert led the Mustangs women's hockey team to a 3-0 shutout victory over the York Lions on Saturday afternoon at Canlan Ice Sports.

With the win the Mustangs continue their season-long reign atop the OUA standings with a record of 15-1-2, while the loss for the Lions gives the team a 9-8-2 record on the season so far and remain in eighth place.

Despite a scoreless first period, the action of the frame demonstrated the strength of the goaltenders guarding the goal lines. The match pitted two of the best goaltenders in the league against each other as the Mustang's Kelly Campbell went up against the Lion's Megan Lee. With both netminders topping the OUA league – Campbell with save percentage and Lee with total saves – the scoreless period showed the strength that both teams harnessed between the posts.

In the second period, the Mustangs offense found a way to penetrate the Lion's net when Rosen found an opening just over two minutes into the action to put the Mustangs up 1-0.

With the one point advantage the Mustangs continued their momentum on into the following plays and a minute and a half later Hubert put the puck past Lee to further the purple and white advantage 2-0.

The Lions came onto the ice in the third frame looking to get themselves onto the scoreboard. The red and white assaulted Campbell with 12 shots on net, but the strong offense attack was of no avail as the Mustangs veteran goaltender held the goal line firmly.

The Lions made their final attempt to cut the Mustangs lead when they pulled Lee from the net in the last minute of play, however the Mustangs picked up possession of the puck and Hubert turned it around with only three seconds left to collect her second goal of the game on an empty net.

When the clock ran down to zero the Mustangs walked away with the 3-0 shutout victory.

The Mustangs will be back in action on Friday, January 30 as they face-off against the Toronto Varsity Blues at 7:00 p.m. at Thompson Arena.
