Preview: Mustangs look to secure wins over Toronto and Ryerson

After splitting their last two road games with a 4-0 loss to the Windsor Lancers and a 3-0 victory over the York Lions, the Mustangs women's hockey team will be bringing the action back to home ice this weekend as they prepare to take on the Toronto Varsity Blues on Friday night before facing off against the Ryerson Rams on Saturday.

With the win and the loss the Mustangs continue to hold the top spot in the OUA and third in the country with a record of 15-1-2.

In last weekend's contest over the Lions,  Katie Hubert notched her second and third goals of the season to contribute to the purple and white's 3-0 shutout victory, while Casey Rosen posted her second goal of the season.
Although last weekend's contest displayed the talents of a number of the Mustangs power forwards, the key contributor to the purple and white victory was veteran goaltender Kelly Campbell.

Campbell and the Mustangs were up against one of the best goaltenders in the league, Megan Lee, as well as league-topping power forward Lisa Stathopulos. Although Stathopulos is known for finding the back of the opposing team's net with 15 total goals on the season so far, she was unable to put the puck past Campbell and the Lions remained scoreless throughout the match.

Campbell ranks among the best in the league in all four goaltending categories as the St. Thomas, Ont., native holds the top spot in the OUA for save percentage with .950, ranks second for win percentage with .812, and is tied for second place for goals against average with 1.35. The fourth year netminder also places third in the league for total saves with 397.

The Toronto Varsity Blues will be entering this Friday's contest after a successful weekend at home where the team edged out the Laurier Golden Hawks 5-4 in shootout action on Saturday before downing the Waterloo Warriors 2-0 on Sunday.
With the pair of wins the Varsity Blues now hold a 13-3-3 record, good for fourth place in the OUA standings.

With a fourth place spot in the league standings and only three weeks left in the regular season before playoff action, the Varsity Blues will be looking to continue their success in order to finish strong and hold an optimal playoff spot.

The Varsity Blues owe much of their success this season to their fifth year goaltender Nicole Kesteris who holds a spot in all four goaltending categories on the OUA leaderboard. Kesteris ranks second in the league for both total saves with 404 and save percentage with .945, while the Aurora, Ont., native also places third and fourth for win percentage and goals against average with .722 and 1.5, respectively.

Western vs. Ryerson – Saturday, January 31 at 7:00 p.m. - Watch live on OUA.tv

The Ryerson Rams will be heading into this weekend's match-up after splitting their games last week. The Rams defeated the Waterloo Warriors 2-1 in shootout rounds on Wednesday before falling to the Laurier Golden Hawks 2-1 on Friday.

With the win and the loss the Rams now hold a 10-9-0 on the season so far, good for seventh place in the OUA standings.

If there is one team that is going to want a victory the most this weekend, it's the Rams as the team is only one spot shy of a being in a playoff position. With a sixth place playoff spot just within reach, there is no doubt that the Rams will be giving it everything they've got in the next three weeks of regular season action.
