Preview: Mustangs welcome Ryerson and Toronto for weekend games

After a trip south of the border, the Western Women's hockey team will return to OUA action this weekend as they play host to the big city duo of Ryerson and Toronto on Saturday and Sunday, respectively.

The Mustangs enjoyed a solid weekend trip, visiting two top ten NCAA Division I programs in Cornell and Qunnipiac. In Ithaca, against the Big Red, the Mustangs lost a tight contest 3-2. Against Qunnipiac they tied 1-1. The games were a great indication of the high quality of the Mustangs this year.

Despite the winless weekend, the Mustangs return north of the border this weekend where they are the big kids on the block, having just been ranked as the number one team in the nation by the CIS.

In their last OUA contest, the Mustangs cruised to a 7-1 victory over Guelph. Scoring depth was the highlight of the game, as no one scored more than one goal. All-Canadian defenceman Katelyn Gosling led to the team with a goal and two assists.

Ryerson will be looking for their first win of the season when they visit Thompson Arena at 4 p.m. on Saturday. The Rams have had some tough luck so far this season, falling in four straight games to Toronto, Guelph, UOIT, and Queen's.

Last year, the Mustangs pulled out wins in both meetings with Ryerson, winning 2-0 on November 16 and 2-1 on January 31. Two players that were part of that squad, Alyssa Connolly and Sarah McGilvray, are at the top of the scoring leaderboard this year along with rookie Karli Nummikoski. All three have two points so far.

The Varsity Blues are ranked fifth in the nation and are currently on a four game win streak. The Blues and the Mustangs have already tangled this year, in an exhibition game in September. In that contest, Toronto forward Jessica Roubichad netted the overtime goal for the Blues to win 3-2.

The Mustangs will be looking to exact revenge when the Blues visit on Sunday. To do so, they'll have to stop Sonja Weidenfelder, who leads Toronto with three goals and four points on the year, and find a way past standout rookie goaltender Valencia Yordanov, who has all four wins and a save percentage of .956%.
