TORONTO –
Matt Marantz tied the game late and
Alex Micallef scored his second goal in double-overtime to send the Mustangs past the Toronto Varsity Blues 3-2 at Varsity Arena Friday night.
The win keeps Western undefeated on the season through four games while the Varsity Blues move to 2-2-1 on the year. The Mustangs dressed less than a full 20 players for the third straight game due to injuries, with 19 players suiting up for the team in Toronto.
Marantz's game-tying goal came with just 1:23 left in the third period and backstop
Peter Delmas off for the extra attacker.
Shaun Furlong and
Trent Ouellette picked up assists on the goal on a night when Western's veterans came through in a big way.
Ouellette and Marantz both had multi-point nights with two assists and three points, respectively, while Furlong and Gaskin each had helpers. Ouellette is now tied for the team-lead in goals and points on the year with three and seven, respectively. Marantz also has seven points (2g, 5a).
Meanwhile, Delmas registered his second OUA win in the second start of his career, stopping 22 shots for the second consecutive game. He has been as reliable as you could have wanted through his first two, and leads the team with a .936 save percentage.
In a large contrast to their first three games the Mustangs were clicking on all cylinders when it came to their power play on Friday. Western entered the game without a goal on the man advantage and finished the night with two on four opportunities.
The purple and white also shut out the Varsity Blues on their three power plays, making them 14-for-15 on the penalty kill this year. Their 93.3 penalty kill percentage is good enough for second-best in the league behind Laurier.
Next up for the Mustangs is a matchup against the Guelph Gryphons tomorrow night, as they'll take the late bus back to London tonight to prepare for a 7:00 p.m. meeting at Thompson Arena. Fans can watch all the action live on OUA.tv
NOTES: Both Ouellette and Marantz are now on four-game point-streaks to start the season. Ouellette has three multi-point games this season while Marantz has two… Look for Dodds to get the start on Saturday if he's healthy. If that's the case, he'll be vying for his second win of the year after beating Ryerson last week… Western is now second in the OUA West behind first-place Windsor.
