WINDSOR, Ont. – A goal from Amanda Boyle in the second half led Western to beat the Lancers 1-0 on Sunday afternoon in their final game of the regular season.
The win gives Western a final record of 11-2-3 with 36 points in the OUA West division, while the loss gives Windsor a record of 6-9-1 and 19 points. The Mustangs have clinched third place in the OUA West Division and are set to host the OUA Quarterfinal match against the sixth place, Guelph Gryphons.
Closing the regular season, both teams made it difficult for their opponents to make progress in the offense. In the first half, Western was only able to hit the Windsor net twice, with both shots being stopped by Windsor's Krystin Lawrence. On the other end, Windsor was only able to hit the Western net once, a shot that was saved by Tori Edgar.
With no score, tensions were high moving into the final half. Both teams spent more time around their opponent's net, tallying in more shots and more corner kicks compared to the first 45 minutes.
Ten minutes into the second half, Boyle, Western's top scorer, was subbed onto the field. At the 66 minute mark she scored her 12th goal of the season and the only goal of the entire match.
With ten minutes left in play, the game winning goal wasn't the only time Boyle got onto the scoresheet, also receiving the only yellow card of the match.
In response to the goal against, the Lancers attempted to fix the deficit. They put four shots on the purple and white, but were unable to find the back of the net.
The final whistle marked another win for Western, and Edgar's seventh shutout of the season.
