Returning to the court following a debut that saw the Mustangs split their record 1-1, the team is poised to put themselves back on track and pick up a positive record in Guelph on October 30.
With the weekend matches against Nipissing (W, 3-2) and York (L, 2-3) decided by a fifth set, the Mustangs continue to prove resilience on the floor while showing strength in key positions.
Gavin Taylor, now in his third year as a member of the purple and white, has taken it upon himself to step up and fill the role of point leader. With 34 points throughout Western's debut weekend, he is also perhaps the Mustang most highly represented on the OUA and CIS leaderboards. The Brampton native is third in the OUA for total kills (26), tied for first in total digs (17), third in solo blocks, and second in total points.
The 6-4 attacker also currently holds down a spot on the CIS board, ranking third in solo blocks (5).
Also dominating at the net is middle
Chris Newcombe, who closed out the opening weekend by sharing the top spot within the CIS in solo blocks (6). Standing at 6-8, he also picked up second place in the OUA for total blocks (10).
Keeping the Mustangs competitive in the back court is starting libero
Seth Siegfried who shares the top spot within the OUA for total digs (17) with Taylor.
Brad Hockin, with 16 digs, comes in just behind his teammates in fourth. Also putting up impressive numbers is
Zeid Hamadeh. Leading the OUA in total service aces (5), he also sits in eighth nationally for service aces per set (0.5).
While the Gryphons don't have the same presence as the Mustangs on the national leaderboard, they're found all over the OUA's top charts.
Red and Gold point leader Josh Green sits eight overall in total kills (20), while also holding down ninth in total digs (14).
Kendrick Kerr, one of Guelph's top blockers, has also proven to be a threat in the back court. With four service aces, he sits second in the OUA for service aces, and eighth nationally for service aces per set (0.5).
Setter Kyle Richards is the final Gryphon to appear on the leaderboards, matching Kerr's positions for service aces and aces per set. Posting 63 assists over opening weekend, he also sits third provincially for total assists and seventh for assists per set (7.88).
Beginning the season with two four set losses to Toronto and Ryerson, Guelph will be headed into the weekend looking to secure their first "W" of the season. Although, the first two Gryphon matchups have exposed inconsistencies in their level of play and confidence on the court.
The Mustangs will experience the Gryphon corps for themselves on October 30, when they hit the 401 to head to the W.F. Mitchell Athletics Centre. The first serve is expected to be sent out at 8pm, with fans able to live stream all the action at
