The Mustangs are will be looking to rebound on the road after hosting a pair games this weekend at Thompson Arena.
Western finished the weekend with a win, 3-1 over Ryerson, and a loss, a 3-0 affair against the undefeated U of T Blues. The weekend left their record sitting at 3-2, good for eight in the OUA .
The purple and white will be looking to get back into the win column this week, as they take the long northern road trip to North Bay and Sudbury.
The story of the weekend for Mustangs was the lopsided play of their special teams. The penalty kill was outstanding, going 14 for 15 on the weekend, with the lone goal coming when they were down two skaters against Toronto. However, the Mustangs had trouble finding the net with the man advantage, going 0 for 11 on the weekend.
The Mustangs were outshot in both game, but goaltender Kelly Campbell was in standard form stopping 61 of 64 shots on the weekend which translates to a .953 save percentage.
Forward
Brittany Clapham led the team in scoring on the weekend, factoring in on all three goals with two goals and an assist. She is tied for the team lead in points with
Kendra Broad with five.
The Mustangs will be hoping the Clapham, Broad and the secondary scorers for the Mustangs find their touch going forward.
Friday, October 30 – 5 p.m. – Western at Nipissing Nipissing is 3-4 and is coming off a tight loss to Queens. The Lakers are yet to win a game at home this season, going 0-1-0-2 at Memorial Gardens so far. The Mustangs will be looking to continue that trend as they visit North Bay on Friday night.
The Lakers are led offensively by second year forward Samantha Strassburger, who has three goals and an assist in 7 games. Third year goalie Jacqueline Rochefort is also having a good season so far. In six starts, she has posted a 1.33 GAA and .951 SV%.
They are a young team building for the future, and only carry one senior on their roster. Last year, the Mustangs won both of their matchups vs Nipissing by scores of 2-1 and 3-2.
Saturday, October 31 – 3:50 p.m. – Western vs Laurentian The next day the Mustangs will travel onwards to Sudbury to tackle Laurentian. The Voyageurs have also dropped four, with all of those loses coming in the last four games.
They have only scored one goal in their last three contests, so their impact players will be pressing to get on the board against the Mustangs.
The Voyageurs are led in scoring by Elissa Bertuzzi who has three points in seven games. Goaltenders Emily Toffolli and Laura Deller have split duties between the pipes, and share a 2.09 GAA and a .921 SV%.
