Second half goal leads McMaster over Western

LONDON, Ont. – A header by Stefan Scholtz proved to be the difference as the McMaster Marauders defeated the Western Mustangs by a 1-0 score on Saturday afternoon at Mustangs Field.

"We would've liked to have had the win, for sure, or at least a tie, but we didn't get it. So we've just got to keep fighting," said Western head coach Rock Basacco. "We tried to stay mistake free, which we were. They created a nice goal."

The loss keeps the Mustangs in sixth place in the OUA West with 11 points and a 3-6-2 record. McMaster is in second place with an 8-2-0 record, good for 24 points in the standings.

Western started off strong against the highly ranked Marauders, keeping the scoreboard even until midway through the second half. At the 63 minute mark, the Marauders fired a cross from the left side to Scholtz who headed the pass into the net to secure the only goal of the game.

"It was pretty disappointing, considering we played with them for the entire game," said Western defender Jonathan Hodge. "We played well, they played well, but they just came out with a better result than us. But, I think we could've won the game. We just had to play harder and the field conditions didn't help either."

"We've got to get two or three wins, and I think that'll sort of get us into a playoff position. And in the playoffs, anything can happen," said head coach Basacco.

Western's next contest will take place on Sunday afternoon in Waterloo against the Laurier Golden Hawks. Game time is set for 3:15 p.m. at University Stadium.
