Mustangs bounce back with 5-1 win over Nipissing

NORTH BAY, Ont. – Andrew Goldberg scored two first period goals and the Mustangs bounced back from a tough loss the night before with a 5-1 victory over Nipissing on Saturday night.

The win marks Western's sixth of the season and gives them a 6-1-0 record on the year. The Mustangs are still near the top of the OUA West Division, sitting in second place with 12 points, while Nipissing now has a 2-3-3 record in the OUA East Division.

Greg Dodds picked up the win for the Mustangs, his fourth of the season. Matt Marantz led Western with three points, including the game's first goal just over six minutes into the opening frame, while David Corrente also had a multi-point night with two assists.

The game was never truly in question for Western, despite the fact that they gave up a four goal lead just the night before. Marantz and Goldberg combined for three first period goals before Cole Benson and Scott Teskey added insurance markers in the middle frame. Goldberg's first goal was Western's only with the man advantage on five chances.

Domenic Graham started the game for the Lakers before giving way to Kirk Rafuse to start the third period. Graham stopped 17 shots while Rafuse stopped seven shots in the final frame. Joel Herbert provided their only support of the night with a goal just over 15 minutes into the third period.

Saturday night's effort marked the second time in a row that the Mustangs opened the game with a scoring frenzy, as they jumped out to a four goal on Friday only to see it slip away. But Dodds would have none of that on Saturday, turning aside 21 shots through the last two periods to help Western come away with their sixth win of the season.

His play helped keep Western perfect on the penalty kill, meaning the Mustangs have given up just one power play goal through seven games this season. The league's best penalty kill continues to impress this season despite a large amount of turnover on the roster from last year.

The Mustangs will return to the ice next weekend for a pair of contests against another set of OUA East opponents in Concordia and UQTR on Friday and Saturday respectively. Game times are set for 7 p.m. and 4 p.m., with both games being shown live on OUA.tv

NOTES: Marantz is now on a seven game point streak while line mate Trent Ouellete had his six game streak snapped… Sean Callaghan and Nipissing's Jacob McDowell combined for three penalties apiece throughout the game. McDowell took a pair of goaltender interference penalties while Callaghan had a pair of high sticking penalties in the first and third periods…
