The Western Mustangs women's lacrosse team lengthened their winning streak this past weekend with four big wins against McMaster Marauders, Guelph Gryphons, Queen's Gaels, and Toronto Varsity Blues.
The purple and white travelled to Waterloo on Saturday where they first handed McMaster an 8-0 loss. The Marauders defence played well making, especially in net, making it difficult for the Mustangs to convert as they took a 4-0 lead into halftime.
Western's
Megan Wilkins had a big game, leading the team with five goals.
Sheehan Mulholland also found the back of the net with a goal and two assists, followed by
Tenyka Snider with two goals and an assist, as well
Hayley Liske with two assists.
Later that day the Mustangs took on the Gryphons and claimed a 15-2 victory. Both teams battled through heavy rain and wind, as well as cold temperatures, but Western's strong teamwork proved to be a major factor in the win as the Mustangs recorded eight assists on their 15 goals. Leading the way on the scoresheet was
Lauren Stewart with four goals and an assist, while both Wilkins and
Heather Pearson who each recorded hat tricks. Snider added two goals and two assists in the win, while Mulholland registered a goal and four assists, and
Stephanie Orlando and
Mikaela Harrison rounded out the scoring.
Western travelled to Toronto the following day to take on the Gaels in the closest match of the season thus far as the Mustangs skills were tested in the 13-11 victory. The Gaels took a 7-6 lead into halftime and proceed to score the game's next three goals before the Mustangs stormed back, rattling off seven consecutive goals to take the lead before Queen's scored the final marker of the game. Mulholland impressed in the win, scoring eight goals to help her earn Western's Female Athlete of the Week award, while Snider recorded a hat trick, and both Harrison and Stewart chipped in a goal apiece.
The Mustangs final game of the weekend was against hosts, University of Toronto Varsity Blues, who were also undefeated up to this point in the season. The Mustangs prevailed with a 14-4 victory, giving them the lead in the overall OUA standings.
The Mustangs are schedule to host Brock and Laurier this coming Saturday, October 10. The purple and white will take on the Badgers at 9:45 a.m. followed by the Golden Hawks at 3 p.m.
