Western Mustangs Sports

MVB v. RMC and Queen's

Men's Volleyball By Pam Bialik

Preview: Mustangs open home schedule vs RMC and Queen's

Looking to extend a two game winning streak into four, the Mustangs will host both the RMC Paladins and the Queen's Gales in weekend action at Alumni Hall - the first home court advantage men's volleyball has seen this season.

Previous matches have seen Western waver, dropping points from unforced errors to dig a point deficit for themselves. However, they're rarely unable to rebound, often coming back stronger than they began.

Third year Gavin Taylor continues to lead the team offensively, averaging 4.1 points per game. A native of Brampton, the 6-4 outside hitter has come into his own this season. With a tendency to send out highlight reel worthy attacks and serves, Taylor has quickly become one of Western's players to watch.

Zeid Hamadeh has also played an increasingly important role. One of the most consistent attackers on the court, the Ottawa product makes impressive plays at key times, often the one to end opposing point streaks.

Keeping Western competitive in the back court is third year libero Seth Siegfried. With 42 digs to average 2.33 per set, the Kinesiology student is a proven talent who's able to provide the team with a strong foundation for attacks.

Heading into the weekend at 0-6, the Paladins will be charged up and looking to pick up their first win of the season at Alumni Hall.

Blake McClelland and Dale Towe have been topping the Paladin scoresheet so far this season, each recording 63 points for an average of 3.3 per set. McClelland has proven himself to be a threat at the net with 3.00 kills per set, whereas Towe's 2.84 kills per set are supplemented through his strong serving.

Statistically, the Paladin game seems to ride on their ability to receive attacks, as they sit third in the OUA for digs per set and fourth in total digs.  Considering much of the purple and white game rides on the ability of athletes like Taylor and Hamadeh to find the floor, the RMC defense could spell trouble.

London native Edgar Gonzalez has been leading the Paladin corps to success from the backcourt, as the top libero in the CIS. Averaging 3.25 digs per set, avoiding Gonzalez will be key for a Mustang victory.

One a three game hot-streak to bring their early season record to 4-1, the Gaels will be looking to take down the rival Mustangs to further improve their record and surpass Ryerson and McMaster in the OUA rankings.

With few athletes leaving the team, the Gael contingent has only improved from last season.

2014-15 OUA and CIS Libero of the Year Ivo Dramov has returned to average 2.83 digs per set and lead the Queen's defense.

Graduating from York after four years as a key member of the Lions, Queen's Athlete of the Week Marko Dakic has joined the Gaels for his final year of CIS eligibility as he pursues a law degree. Immediately making an impact, the 6-6 outside hitter leads Queen's offensively with an average of 4.8 points per set.
