Mustangs bounce back with 20-point win over Windsor

LONDON, Ont - The Mustangs 20-point lead late in the third frame proved too large of a challenge for the host Windsor Lancers to overcome, allowing Western to walk away victorious with a score of 83-63 at the St. Denis Centre on Friday night.

The Mustangs record now moves to 2-1 putting them at a tie in first place with the Lancers, who suffered their first loss of the season and fall to 2-1.

Greg Morrow recorded a game-high 28 points and 15 rebounds, while also adding eight assists to just narrowly miss out on a triple-double. Alex Coote recorded a career-high 23 points against the Lancers, going an impressive 6-9 from behind the three point line.

His success contributed to Western's 44.0% success rate from the arc, compared to the Lancers 30.6% conversion rate.  Peter Scholtes showed off his talent around the perimeter sinking 75% of his three-point shots from beyond the arc. He went on to score 12 of the Mustangs points and followed Morrow with six rebounds.

Alex Campbell played a huge part of the Lancers in the second half of the contest, finishing with a team-high 21 points. Isiah Osborne followed with 11 points as the only other Lancer in double digits on the night. Randy Oriakhi led the Lancers on he boards, grabbing nine rebounds, and was followed by Mike Rocca with six.

The Lancers were quick to the basket, going 8-0 through the first five minutes of play, however after two consecutive three-point shots by Scholtes, the Mustangs caught up to their opponents. After a low scoring start, the Mustangs managed to come back from their early deficit to lead the Lancers 13-8 going into the second frame.

Windsor were able to get themselves within just one point within two minutes of play in the second quarter. Noticing their quickened pace, the Mustangs heightened their defence and quickly regained control, going on a 13-3 run to lead 30-19 before finishing the half up 39-31.

After their early deficit, the Mustangs refused to look back, dominating the scoreboard and outscoring their opponents 22-14. Despite being heavily defended, Morrow scored the Mustangs first 10 points of the half, before Coote added seven of his own
along with another basket from Morrow and a free throw from Tom Filgiano to put Western in front 60-40. Western eventually finished out the frame up 61-45.

Despite trailing by 16, the Lancers weren't ready to concede the contest, opening with an 8-0 run to pull within eight points of the Mustangs less than a minute into the final quarter. They narrowed the gap to only five points with just under seven minutes remaining, however eight points from Anthony Spiridis helped the Mustangs secure their lead, finishing the night with an 83-63 victory.

The Mustangs continue their season back at home against the Ryerson Rams on Friday, November 20 at Alumni Hall. Tip-off is at 8 p.m. and can be watched live on OUA.tv.
