ST. CATHARINES, Ont. –
Kelly Campbell made 26 saves,
Britt Loggie scored the game-winning goal just over four minutes into the third, and Western walked away with a 3-1 victory over Brock at the Seymour Hannah Arena on Saturday afternoon.
The win is Western's second straight, putting them on their second win streak of the young season. Brock entered fresh off a pair of victories, including a win against one of the league's best teams in Toronto, but fall to 3-1-6-0 with the loss.
Stacey Scott got the scoring started for the Mustangs, taking a pass from
Evra Levesque and depositing it past Jensen Murphy. Murphy stood on her head in the second period to keep Brock in the game, making 18 saves in the middle frame alone and finishing with 30.
Besides the Western-dominated second period, however, the Badgers actually outshot the Mustangs for the better part of the game. They had two more shots than Western in the first before edging the purple and white out by a total of 14-9 in the third. But goals from Loggie and
Megan Taylor in the third helped the Mustangs come away with three points.
Ali Beres set up Loggie for the game-winner 4:36 into the frame, while Taylor's tally came with the help of
Kendra Broad and
Brittany Clapham just under seven minutes later. Between those markers was a response from Brock's Isabella Triolo, who cut Western's lead in half with help from Brittany Gillmor and Christina Ieradi.
Neither team clicked on the power play on Saturday, as Brock went 0-for-6 and Western went 0-for-3, extending their scoreless streak on the power play to five straight games. On the bright side, they haven't allowed a power play goal since October 25, and have a top-ten penalty kill percentage in the OUA at 91.9%.
Western will have a chance to get going on their second three-game win streak of the season tomorrow when they return home for a game against the Laurier Golden Hawks at Thompson Arena. The Hawks currently sit just two points behind Western in the OUA standings, although that could change tonight depending on the result of their game against Ryerson.
Notes: Western's goaltending has been absolutely stellar as of late, as Campbell and
Peyton Parker have combined for a .974 save percentage through their last three games. Parker sandwiched a shutout against Laurentian between two one-goal performances by Campbell, who is fourth in the OUA with a .950 save percentage… Taylor and Loggie's goals were their first of the year. Scott is now tied with
Tia Kipfer for the most goals on the team with four…
