LONDON, Ont. –
Kendra Broad recorded two goals to lead the Western Mustangs women's hockey team over the first place Queen's Gaels 4-1 on Saturday night.
The win is Western's five consecutive victory and puts the Mustangs into a tie with Queen's atop the OUA standings with 24 points each.
It has been the resurgence of the offence that has been a key part of helping the Mustangs build their winning streak. Broad, who now has 12 points, has been a major part of Western's game including scoring two goals for the second night in a row.
Not to be outdone by the offence, netminder
Kelly Campbell put in another fantastic performance on Saturday, stopping 34 of the 35 shots sent her way to record her sixth win of the season. Caitlyn Lahonen also played strong in the Queen's net, making 33 stops in the loss.
Maybe the most promising part of the Mustangs impressive win on Saturday was the play of their power play. After struggling for much of the season, Western went 2 for 3 against Queen's.
Broad opened the scoring on the power play 13:24 seconds into the first frame, converting assists from
Brittany Clapham and defenceman
Brianna Iazzolino. The assists are their tenth and sixth points, respectively.
Forward
Ali Beres followed up Broad's effort with a power play goal of her own, an unassisted goal with only a minute left in the period, to give the Mustangs a 2-0 lead after 20 minutes.
Broad continued her hot streak by potting her second goal of the game just over seven minutes into the second period. It was the only goal of the frame and the Mustangs took their 3-0 lead into the third.
Queens struck back on the power play in the third, but it was too little too late as
Evra Levesque scored an empty net goal to secured the 4-1 victory for the Mustangs.
The Gaels won't have to wait long before trying to avenge Saturday's loss as they'll travel to Thompson Arena to take on the Mustangs on Friday night at 7 p.m. Western will then wrap-up their first half schedule on Saturday at 7 p.m. against Guelph.
