Mustangs fall to undefeated CIS No.2 Ravens

OTTAWA, Ont - After outscoring the Mustangs 18-5 in the first frame, the Carleton Ravens continued to dominate the scoring and walked away with a 83-46 victory on Friday night at the Raven's Nest.

The Mustangs record now moves to 3-3, keeping them in third place of the OUA West Division Standings behind the Windsor Lancers and Laurier Golden Hawks.

The Ravens victory keeps them undefeated for the first half of the season, as they have a record of 6-0 and are tied for first place with the Ottawa Gee Gees in the OUA North.

Greg Morrow shared the title of highest-scorer with the Ravens' Gavin Resch, as they had 21 apiece. Jedson Tavernier and Anthony Spiridis share the next highest score for the purple and white with eight points apiece. Morrow grabbed seven rebounds with Spiridis and Peter Scholtes registering five of their own.

The Ravens lineup boasted a few high scorers on Friday, with Ryan Ejim making 18 points for the team after Resch. Ejim also grabbed seven rebounds. Cameron Smythe and Kaza Kajami-Keane followed with six points of their own against the Mustangs.

The Ravens managed close to 20% better of a success rate than the Mustangs, making 50% of their field goal attempts compared to the purple and white 31.0%. A number of three-point shots by Resch and Ejim, who made eight three point shots in the game, kept their success rate at 42.2% compared to the Mustangs 20%.

The Mustangs were challenged by the Ravens early in the game, running up against their intense defence right from the beginning of the quarter. Despite keeping up a fast pace, the Mustangs were blocked from getting to their net. Wood showed up on the scoresheet with high numbers, making two consecutive three point shots to help the Ravens climb the board.

The Mustangs struggled to finish their baskets in the second frame and faced an outpour of Ravens' shots. The home team found their success at the three point line, with more than half their shots in the frame recorded form the arc.

Mayambo sunk three of those baskets at the perimeter, including the final basket of the frame to extend their lead to 25 points. As the Mustangs were able to knock 11 points, the Ravens outshot with 23 points in the frame and a score of 41-16.

The Mustangs were able to gain some momentum in the third frame. Lead by Morrow, who knocked down 9 points in the first five minutes of the frame, the team spent a majority of the frame taking turns with baskets. But back to back three point shots late in the frame by Resch followed by a dunk by Ejim powered the Ravens to a 30-point lead, and the third frame eventually ended in Ravens favour of 59-33.

The Mustangs stick in Ottawa to play the Ottawa Gee Gees on Saturday Night at the Montpetit Hall. Tip-off is at 8 p.m. and can be watched live on OUA.tv.
