OTTAWA – Western's faltering power play got back on track with two goals but the Mustangs just couldn't catch up to Carleton on Saturday, as Michael McNamee registered his first career OUA hat trick to help the Ravens to a 4-3 victory at the Ice House.
The purple and white entered the game sitting first in the OUA West Division but left the Ice House in second place, as York picked up a big 4-3 victory over Concordia on the road.
Carleton now has ten wins on the season and move into third in the tough OUA East Division ahead of UOIT.
The Ravens were never behind in the game, opening the scoring with a goal from McNamee in the first before netting three markers in the middle frame. After
Connor Chartier responded to two Carleton goals with one of his own, McNamee completed his hat trick to send the game into the third and final frame with the score at 4-2.
Chartier added his second of the night just 44 seconds into the third but it wasn't enough to spark the Mustangs, as Francis Dupuis turned away 11 of 12 shots to help secure the win.
Peter Delmas put together a solid outing for the Mustangs, stopping 44 shots including 17 in a busy first period and 16 more in the second. It was the second straight start with over 40 shots for Delmas, but he looked no worse for the wear on Saturday night.
He didn't have much of a chance on a number of Carleton's goals either, as McNamee had an easy tap-in for his first and benefitted from having a man advantage on his third while David Weckworth went bar-down off a no-look feed from Brett Welychka for the Ravens' second marker of the night. McNamee's power play goal was Carleton's only of the game on four opportunities.
The two teams combined for seven infractions in a busy first period before adding five in the second. Carleton took the only penalty of the final frame, as Justin Stevens was called for roughing just over five minutes in, but the Mustangs couldn't capitalize to tie the game.
Still, overall it was a good night for Western's power play, which had failed to score a goal in three straight games prior to Saturday. The purple and white are now fifth in the OUA with the man advantage at 24.4% while their penalty kill remains tops in the league at 87.3%.
Western is back on the ice next week for their last games of 2015. They'll take on Windsor on December 2 before heading to Waterloo on December 4 for a game against the Warriors. Despite going just 1-3 over their last four games, the Mustangs have a chance to finish out the calendar year in first place thanks to an above-average start to the season.
NOTES: With his three goals on the night, McNamee joins Welychka in the top-ten of OUA scoring. McNamee's 22 points are good enough for seventh place while Welychka now has 23 points and sits tied for fourth in the league. Ryan Van Stralen also had three helpers for Carleton…
Alex Micallef and
Matt Marantz continued their hot seasons, each recording two assists. Both players have surpassed OUA career highs this season and are top ten in scoring for their respective positions.
