With a 2-1 record on the season so far, the Mustangs return to action this week for a Friday matchup against the Windsor Lancers.
The previous three matches saw five sets each, with Western struggling to close out strong due to attack and reception errors.
Gavin Taylor, point leader for all three games, now leads both the purple and white contingent as well as the OUA in total points with 63.5. Averaging 3.33 kills per set to lead the Mustangs, the 6-4 Brampton native holds down the fifth spot among all OUA players. Taylor's five solo blocks also have him entangled in a multi-way tie for fourth within the CIS.
Coming in just ahead of Taylor on the CIS charts is
Chris Newcombe, whose six solo blocks slot him in third, while averaging 1.20 blocks per set to sit in sixth.
Also making an appearance on the CIS leaderboard is second year
Zeid Hamadeh. With seven service aces recorded, he is in eighth for both total service aces and service aces per set while leading Ontario in total aces.
Starting libero
Seth Siegfried's 32 digs put him second in the OUA for total digs, while
Brad Hockin's 128 total assists earn him fourth place provincially.
The Lancers head into Friday's game with a 0-3 record, with all but one set decided by fewer than five points. Looking to put up their first win of the season, Windsor's tendency to fight for every set until the last point could spell trouble for the Mustangs.
The previous season's matchup between Western and the Lancers resulted in a 1-1 record, with the Mustangs coming up short in a four set loss before taking the second match in five.
However, the upcoming game is likely to look much different on the Windsor half of the court, with the team suffering some substantial losses. Former starting setter Andrew Chelladurai, point leaders Gabriel Burlacu and Greg Simone, and top blocker Adam Thompson are all absent from this year's roster.
Middle Josh Edwards has filled the hole left by Burlacu and Simone, leading the Lancer scoresheet to record team high numbers in blocking (6 total), kills (31), attack percentage(.436), and total points (38.5). Appearing third on the CIS leaderboad for attack percentage, the native of Seely, Ont. is also ranked tenth provincially in both kills per set (3.10) and points per set (3.9).
The only other gold and blue presence on the leaderboards comes from setter Doug Inglis. With 10.17 assists per set, he sits third provincially and seventh nationally.
The first serve of Friday's match is expected to go out at 7 p.m., with fans able to watch all the action live at
