Preview: Mustangs end regular season against Golden Hawks and Warriors

The Mustangs finish their OUA regular season with a pair of games this week when they host the Laurier Golden Hawks on Wednesday at Alumni Hall before hitting the road on Saturday to face the Waterloo Warriors.

The Mustangs currently sit in second place in the OUA West Division Standings with a record of 11-7 and 22 points, trailing behind the Windsor Lancers who have 26 points. The Golden Hawks are one spot and eight points behind the Mustangs, sitting in third place with a record of 7-11 and 14 points. The Warriors are in fourth and are only four points behind the Golden Hawks.

Greg Morrow tops the Mustangs scoresheet with 22.9 points per game, putting him fourth in the CIS Offence Leaderboard. His strong defence was a key factor in the Mustangs recent contests with six rebounds against the Laurentian Voyageurs and an average of 7.3 rebounds per game.

Quinn Henderson and Anthony Spiridis join Morrow at the top of the purple and white scoresheet with 11.7 and 10.7 points per game, respectively. Along with the defensive force of Tom Filgiano who has averaged 5.2 rebounds per game, look out for the likes of these players to make a strong impact in the Mustangs upcoming contests.

The Golden Hawks last five games ended with a 2-3 record, including a victory against the Nipissing Lakers in their most recent contest. After giving up five losses at the start of the new year, the Golden Hawks look to be making a turnaround and will be looking to start a winning streak with a win against the Mustangs.

This is the second contest between the two teams, the last in early January with Western taking the victory with a score of 75-69. Will Coulthard topped the scoreboard for Laurier with 18 points against the Mustangs, and currently leads the Golden Hawks with 18 points per game.

Teammates Garrison Thomas and Aiddian Walters lead the Golden Hawks defence with 5.2 and 5.1 rebounds per game, respectively, making them a tough force in their opponent's key. Both players have over a 50% success rate from the free throw line, along with over half the team having large success rates from the line as well. The Mustangs must watch their fouls to prevent the Golden Hawks from having any opportunities at the line.

Saturday, February 21 at Waterloo Warriors - at 3:00 p.m. - Watch live on OUA.tv.

After the Mustangs victory against the Warriors in early January, their second contest comes with the Warriors having completed a 7-3 record in their last ten games. The Warriors are currently on a two game winning streak after victories against Nipissing and Laurentian, and will be hoping to extend their streak with a win against the purple and white.

Three players on the Warriors lineup have averaged double digits per game, with Myles Charvis leading the team with 20 points per game on average. Jon Ravenhorst leads the team with 6.0 rebounds per game, making him one of the Mustangs biggest threats on the Warriors defence.

With an overall success rate of 69.6% at the free throw line, the Mustangs must be careful in their defence and fouls given to prevent the Warriors from having a chance at the line. The Mustangs 44.9% field goal success compared to the Warriors 39.2% gives the Warriors a challenge defensively.
