ST. CATHERINES, Ont. - The Mustangs women's hockey team picked up their second win of the weekend on Sunday afternoon as they edged out the Brock Badgers 2-1 on the Badger's home ice at the Seymour-Hannah Centre.
With the win the No. 3 Mustangs continue to hold the top spot in the OUA with a record of 18-1-3 while the loss for the Badgers keeps the team at the bottom of the standings with a 1-17-4 record on the season so far.
Despite being on opposite ends of the standings, the Mustangs knew from experience that they would have to work hard in order to come out on top as the Badgers pushed the purple and white into overtime in week eight of OUA action.
Both teams came out into the opening period ready to compete and the Badger's proved once again that they had the ability to compete with the top place team as Brock's goalie Emily Kelly remained firm between the pipes, stopping all nine Mustang shots to keep the purple and white from taking an early advantage.
With Kelly standing strong between the posts for the Badgers and the Mustang's netminder Peyton Parker stopping all six Badger's shots at the other end of the ice the match went into the first intermission with a blank scoreboard.
The Mustangs came out of the break determined to take control of the game and it was second year forward Tia Kipfer who did just that as she put the puck past Kelly early in the frame to give Western the one-point advantage.
The purple and white continued that momentum on throughout the period as Kendra Broad collected the second goal of the game and her 13th of the season to further the Mustangs lead 2-0.
Despite being outshot by the Mustangs 14-7, the Badgers were able to capitalize on their opportunities as Christina Ieradi put the puck past Parker late in the frame to cut the purple and white lead 2-1 heading into the second intermission.
In the final frame the Badgers worked hard to recover from the Mustang advantage but were unable to pick up a point to even out the score before the clock ran out of time.
The Mustangs walked away with the 2-1 victory to claim their 18th win of the season heading into the final week of OUA action next weekend.
The Mustangs will be back in action on Saturday, February 13 as they face-off against the No. 4 Queen's Gaels at 7:00 p.m. on their home ice at Thompson Arena. The game can be caught live-streamed on OUA.tv.
