Game Recap: Women's Hockey | | By Serena Quinn

Mustangs defeat Gryphons to win first OUA Championship

LONDON, Ont. – The Mustangs women's hockey team are known to don the colours of purple and white but they added a little bit of gold to their ensemble on Saturday afternoon when they hoisted the Judy McCaw Memorial Cup for the first time in program history with a 2-0 shutout win over the Guelph Gryphons at the OUA Championship hosted at Thompson Arena.

"I thought we played our best game of the season," said Mustangs head coach Chris Higgins. "There were stretches when we were a little bit back on our heels but we had solid d-zone coverage, we fore-checked, we skated, [and] we moved the puck."

While coach Higgins was pleased with their performance in Saturday's contest, the players were happier than words could explain after winning the OUA Championship title.

"I don't know if you can put that into words," said Sydney Kidd. "It's kind of like Christmas, winning the lottery, and finding out that you're getting a puppy [all in one]."

While Saturday's contest marked the last home game for the Mustangs, the purple and white will now set their sights on the CIS Championship title as they travel to Calgary, Alberta next week to compete against seven of the best teams in the country in the CIS Women's Hockey Championship tournament which will take place from March 12-15.

While a CIS Championship tournament is unchartered territory for the Mustangs, coach Higgins notes that with the win Western is now ranked number two and will presumably face a lower seed in Calgary, which will be a bonus for the Mustangs.

Kidd was a crucial contributor to the Mustangs win as the Sundridge, Ont., native picked up the loose puck at the corner of Gryphon's goaltender Stephanie Nehring's net and poked it across the goal line just 49 seconds into the second period to give the Mustangs the one-goal advantage.

Kidd's goal in Saturday's contest marks her fifth goal in the post-season as the veteran Mustang has now collected five goals and one assist in five games for a grand total of 12 goals and six assists in her last season in purple and white.

"I couldn't ask for anything better in my final season but it was really a team effort with an amazing team behind me."

Kidd's outstanding and consistent performance throughout the post-season has earned her the Player of the Playoffs award which was presented to her in Saturday's post-game ceremony.

While Kidd put the Mustangs onto the scoreboard first, a number of other Mustang athletes were instrumental in the purple and white victory.

Mustangs regular season point's leader Kendra Broad recorded an assist on Kidd's second period goal before adding her name to the score sheet for a second time on Saturday afternoon when she picked up the puck at center ice and took it in on Nehring where she delivered an impressive wrist shot that hit the top corner of the net to further the Mustangs advantage 2-0 in the third frame.

Although the Mustangs walked away with the 2-0 victory, the Gryphons fought relentlessly throughout the contest to respond to the deficits they faced. In the first frame, the Gryphons won the opening face-off and charged deep into Mustangs territory where they cycled the puck through their end for the first minute of the action.

Despite the scoreless first period, the Mustangs and the Gryphons went into the first intermission with similar results as the purple and white only outshot the Gryphons nine-to-eight.

Although it was the Mustangs Kidd who won the race to the scoreboard in the second frame, the Gryphons had a number of chances to respond to the Mustangs one-goal lead.

Six minutes into the second period, Mustang Stacey Scott was sent to the box for an interference penalty which gave the Gryphons an opportunity to even out the score on a power play.

The Gryphons took this opportunity to test Campbell between the pipes as they fired off shot after shot on the St. Thomas, Ont., netminder. Despite their best efforts it was Campbell who came out on top as she made three remarkable saves when she stopped a Gryphon shot and a rebound before sliding her pad across the crease to stop a third rebound by the visiting team.

Campbell was quick on her feet throughout Saturday's contest and her performance between the posts played a huge role in the Mustangs championship victory. Campbell stopped all 23 shots on net to allow the Gryphons no goals throughout the entire 60 minutes of play and record her first shutout victory of the post-season.

Campbell's shutout victory also earned her the Player of the Game award which she received in the post-game ceremony.

"There are so many girls out on that ice that deserve it, I was just fortunate enough to get it this year, but there are definitely a lot of girls that deserve it," said Campbell on her award.

As the Mustangs celebrate winning their first ever OUA Championship title with hugs, cheers, and pictures, the Gryphons will not return to Guelph empty-handed as they have earned a berth to the CIS Women's Hockey Championship in Calgary next weekend and will join the Mustangs in a chance to prove themselves on the national stage with the possibility of bringing home the most prestigious title in interuniversity women's hockey.

The Mustangs currently await the official seeding which will determine their first matchup on the national stage. The 2015 CIS Women's Hockey championship is hosted by the University of Calgary with the quarterfinals set to begin on Thursday, March 12. Play will continue through to the the national championship final set for Sunday, March 15, at 8 p.m. Eastern Time. All championship games will be streamed live and all the action can be watched by tuning in on cis-sic.tv with the semi-finals and finals set to also be broadcast live on Sportsnet One as well.
