HAMILTON, Ont. - Western scored in injury time to pull out a draw against the McMaster Marauders on Saturday afternoon at Ron Joyce Stadium.
Â
The tie is the Mustangs' second of the season and is enough to keep the team at the top of the OUA West division. They have a record of 5-0-2. The Marauders sit at fifth place with a record of 2-2-3.
Â
With time added due to injuries at the end of the second half, the Mustangs hoped to make last minute improvements on the 2-1 score that favoured the home team. The Mustangs maintained pressure on their opponents, resulting in the Marauders accidentally scoring on their own net before the final whistle.
Â
The game was evenly matched but at the twenty-one minute mark in the first half
Lauren Winquist netted the first goal of the game, putting Western in the lead 1-0. However, the purple and white lead was short lived, as only five minutes later, McMaster's Marisa Bremner put the ball behind the Western goalie,
Tori Edgar.
Â
Just two minutes after Bremner's goal, McMaster midfielder Maureen Mai added another point for the home team. Following Mai's goal, the Mustangs tightened up their play to prevent Edgar from having to face any more shots in the half.
Â
Down by one goal heading into the final 45 minutes, the Mustangs fought hard to make a comeback. Both teams played aggressively, resulting in one yellow card per team. In the last minute of regular play, Western defender
Sabrina De Nard received Western's first yellow card of the season.
Â
The tough defense paid off, as Edgar only saw one shot on her in the second half, which she stopped. On the other end of the field, the Mustangs gave McMaster goalie Cristina Abbatangelo three shots, but the accident by the home team was the only ball that would make it into the net.
Â
The Mustangs will try to maintain their undefeated record when they return home tomorrow, Sunday, September 20, to face the Brock Badgers on Mustangs Field. Kickoff is at 1 p.m.
