Western falls to Windsor in close contest

LONDON, Ont. – A second half goal from Jack Sargent ended up being the lone goal of the night as the Windsor Lancers edged out the Western Mustangs men's soccer team by a 1-0 score on Wednesday night at Mustangs Field.

"Windsor has a good team. We had some chances, but again, it was a difficult game," said Western head coach Rock Basacco.

Western now holds a 3-4-2 record and are tied for fourth place in the OUA West Division with Laurier, while Windsor maintains their spot atop the division with a 7-1-1 record.

Sargent's goal came at the 51 minute mark after Western was given a foul at the top of their own 18-yard box. Keeper Ben Cowman had already made some great saves in the game and was key in the then 0-0 score, but he was unable to stop Sargent's finely placed shot as he put the ball over the defensive wall and into the Western net to secure a 1-0 lead over the Mustangs.

Sargent's goal came early in the second half after the 45 minutes saw the two teams on equal ground, with neither side being able to solve the other.

Unfortunately for the Mustangs a one-goal lead wouldn't be the only edge that the Lancers would gain in the second half as just moments after Sargent's goal Western freshman Ryan Quong was sent off with a red card, leaving the purple and white a man short for the remainder of the contest.

Despite playing a man down, the Mustangs were able to hold off their opponents as well as create numourous scoring chances for themselves. However, none of those chances were able to make it past Windsor's Kyle Vizirakis, and the Lancers emerged with the 1-0 win.

"We fought," said Western's Adam Jaekel regarding playing with only 10 men for the majority of the second half. "If you look at the kilometers we ran, we outran them. And when you're a man down, you have to run harder, run further to cover space to make up for the guy that's off the field."

Up next, the Mustangs will face last year's CIS champions, the York Lions. The first whistle is set for 2:15 p.m. on Saturday, September 27 at Mustangs Field as part of Western's Homecoming Weekend celebrations.
