LONDON, Ont. - The Western Mustangs women's hockey team will look to continue their steady rise up the OUA standings when they travel to Toronto this weekend in an attempt to tame the York Lions. Taking seven of their last eight contests – falling only to Queen's – the Mustangs have put themselves in prime position to shake off the Nipissing Lakers and take over sole control of second place in the OUA.
The Mustangs did not miss a beat over the holiday season. Going into the break with a win over the CIS No. 1 ranked Guelph Gryphons, the Mustangs returned to the ice this past weekend and posted a 3-0 shutout win over the UOIT Ridgebacks on Sunday afternoon at Thompson Arena. The complete team effort was highlighted by two goals from
Brittany Clapham and a shutout from
Katie Jacobs. Starting just her second game of the year, Jacobs has yet to allow a single goal in her 120 minutes of ice time – stopping all 52 attempted shots.
This weekend, however, will likely mark the return to the net for All-Canadian goalie
Kelly Campbell who has been a consistent presence in the net for the Mustangs this year. She posted .955 save percentage and a 1.36 GAA in the first half of the season, and these performances will be huge going forward for Mustang success.
Western vs. York – Sunday, January 17 at 2 p.m. - Watch live on OUA.tv The game will be the first Mustang match up against the Lions this season, who have lost two in a row coming in to this weekend. The Lions are currently 5-8 and sit ninth in the OUA with 14 points.
Their game against the Mustangs on Sunday will be the second of a back to back weekend at home, first playing host to the Queen's Gaels on Saturday afternoon. The weekend will serve as a great test for the Lions with matchups against the fourth place Gaels and tied for second Mustangs.
The Lions are led in scoring by forward Rianna Langford, who has four goals and six points in 13 games. The Lions have struggled a bit this year to produce offensively, sitting 11th overall in goals scored for the season.
Without a high scoring offence, senior goaltender Megan Lee has been integral in keeping the Lions competitive on the ice with her .935 save percentage and 1.90 goals against average. With three shootout wins under her belt, high pressure situations have proven to be no problem for the Orillia native.
Despite the tall order for the Lions, they will be looking to take some points out of this weekend, and look for them to bring a great effort against the Mustangs
